The nervous system
The central nervous system (CNS) is the brain and spinal cord. It receives information and coordinates the response. The peripheral nervous system is the nerves that carry information between the CNS and the rest of the body.
A receptor detects a stimulus, a change in the environment, such as light or heat. An effector is a muscle or gland that produces the response.

Neurones and receptors
A neurone is a nerve cell that carries electrical signals, called impulses. There are three types, with three jobs.
Receptors are found in sense organs. Each sense has its own receptors.
The table gives the three types of neurone.
| Neurone | Job |
|---|---|
| sensory neurone | carries impulses from a receptor to the central nervous system |
| relay neurone | lies in the brain or spinal cord and links neurones |
| motor neurone | carries impulses from the central nervous system to an effector |
The table gives the sense organs, the stimuli they detect, and the receptors in each.
| Sense organ | Stimulus | Receptor |
|---|---|---|
| eye | light | light receptors in the retina |
| ear | sound | hearing receptors in the cochlea |
| skin | touch, pressure, heat | receptors in the skin |
| nose | smells | receptors in the nasal cavity |
Key ideas

Watch out
Watch out: a neurone is a cell, not an organ. Impulses travel along a neurone, and the neurones of many cells form a nerve.

Check. Information needs a complete pathway. ✓
Synapses
A synapse is the gap between two neurones. When an impulse reaches the end of a neurone, it causes chemical messengers to be released. These diffuse across the synapse and bind to the next neurone, which starts a new impulse.
Because the message crosses the synapse by diffusion, the signal is passed on only one way, from one neurone to the next.
Key ideas
- A synapse is the gap between two neurones.
- Chemical messengers diffuse across the synapse.
- The signal passes on to the next neurone, which starts a new impulse.

Watch out
Watch out: the synapse is a gap, not a wire. Chemical messengers cross the gap; the electrical impulse does not jump across it.
Exam tip

The reflex arc
A reflex is a fast, automatic response to a stimulus. It does not need a conscious decision. The pathway is called a reflex arc:
receptor → sensory neurone → relay neurone (in the spinal cord) → motor neurone → effector.
The relay neurone in the spinal cord connects the sensory and motor neurones directly, so the message does not need to reach the brain for the reflex to happen. The brain may be told afterwards.
Key ideas
- A reflex is fast and automatic.
- The reflex arc goes receptor, sensory, relay, motor, effector.
- The relay neurone is in the spinal cord, so the brain is not needed for the reflex.
- Reflexes protect the body from harm.

Watch out
Watch out: a reflex does not need the brain to make the response, but the brain can still be told about the stimulus afterwards.
Exam tip
Exam tip. Name all five steps of the reflex arc in order, and name the relay neurone in the spinal cord.
Try it (with your teacher, or a grown-up at home). Ask a partner to sit with one leg crossed and tap just below the knee with the edge of your hand, gently. Watch what happens. Do not strike anyone hard; stop if it hurts.

Measuring reaction time
In a ruler drop test, one partner holds a ruler above the other partner’s open thumb and finger, then lets it go. The catcher closes their fingers as soon as they can. The distance the ruler falls, read from the mark where it is caught, is converted to a reaction time using the table.
Repeat the test several times and find the mean distance. A fair test keeps the same hand, the same starting position and the same instructions.
The conversion table gives the reaction time for each distance caught.
| Distance caught (cm) | Reaction time (s) |
|---|---|
| 10 | 0.14 |
| 20 | 0.20 |
| 30 | 0.25 |
| 40 | 0.29 |
Key ideas
- Reaction time is the time between the stimulus and the response.
- A longer fall means a longer reaction time.
- Repeat the test and find the mean distance before converting.
- Keep the hand, the start and the instructions the same for a fair test.
Method. Add the distances, then divide by 3.
- Add. The total is 20 + 30 + 40 = 90 cm.90

- Write the answer. 30 cm
Check. 30 x 3 = 90. ✓
Method. Read the table for 30 cm.
- Read. The table gives 0.25 s for a distance of 30 cm.0.25
- Name it. So the reaction time is 0.25 s.0.25
- Write the answer. 0.25 s
Check. The reaction time is the mean of the readings converted. ✓
Method. Find the largest time.
- Look. The longest time in the table is 0.29 s.0.29
- Name it. That is for a distance of 40 cm.40
- Write the answer. 40 cm
Check. The longest fall gives the longest time. ✓
Watch out
Watch out: reaction time is only one part of the test. Distractions, a different hand, or a different start position make the test unfair.
Exam tip
Exam tip. Find the mean of the distances first, then read the time from the table. Give the answer in seconds.
Try it (with your teacher, or a grown-up at home). With your partner and a grown-up holding the ruler, do the ruler drop test three times with the same hand. Record the mark each time, find the mean distance, and convert it using the table. Do not hold the ruler above anyone without a grown-up.

- Write the answer. 20
Check. 20 x 3 = 60. ✓

- Read. The times are 0.29 s for 40 cm and 0.14 s for 10 cm.0.29 and 0.14
- Calculate. The difference is 0.29 minus 0.14.0.29 - 0.14 = 0.15
- Write the answer. 0.15
Check. 0.14 + 0.15 = 0.29. ✓

- Think. The ruler must fall before a response can be measured.must fall
- Conclude. A zero fall suggests the test was started wrongly, so the result is not reliable.not reliable
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says a zero fall would mean the stimulus was not seen, so the test may have been unfair or the ruler was caught before it fell.
Check. Check the method before the result. ✓

Check. A synapse is not a neurone. ✓
Method. Recall the part.
- Recall. The relay neurone lies in the spinal cord.relay neurone
- Write the answer. relay neurone
Check. It links the sensory and motor neurones. ✓
Method. Follow the arc.
- Order. The arc goes receptor, sensory neurone, relay neurone, motor neurone, effector.receptor
- Name them. So the first step is the receptor and the last is the effector.receptor and effector
- Write the answer. receptor and effector
Check. The effector produces the response. ✓
Method. Think about the steps.
- Think. Messengers are released from the first neurone.released
- Conclude. They diffuse across and bind to the next neurone.bind
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says chemical messengers are released, diffuse across the gap, and bind to the next neurone to start a new impulse.
Check. The signal continues to the next neurone. ✓
Method. Recall the sense organ.
- Recall. The eye detects light with its light receptors.light receptors
- Write the answer. eye
Check. The retina contains the receptors. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read. The table gives 0.29 s for 40 cm.0.29
- Write the answer. 0.29
Check. 40 cm gives the longest time in the table. ✓
Method. Add, then divide by 3.
- Add. The total is 10 + 30 + 40 = 80 cm.80
- Divide. Divide 80 by 3, which is about 26.67.80 / 3
- Write the answer. 26.67
Check. 80 divided by 3 is 26.67, to two decimal places. ✓
Method. Think about speed.
- Think. A reflex is quick and automatic.quick
- Conclude. So the body responds before serious harm is done.before serious harm
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says a reflex is quick, so the body responds before serious harm is done, such as moving the hand from a hot object.
Check. Speed protects the body. ✓
Method. Think about the sense used.
- Think. The catcher uses sight to see the ruler fall.sight
- Name it. So the eye detects the stimulus.eye
- Write the answer. eye
Check. The hand is the effector that makes the catch. ✓
