Counting forwards to 100

Level 2
Count forwards from 0 to 100, Say the number after any number up to 100
Video lesson: Counting forwards to 100Coming soon

We count forwards one number at a time. Each number is one more than the number before.

To find the number after, add one. Go to the next number on the count.

Key ideas

  • Counting forwards means each number is one more.
  • The number after 39 is 40.
  • Count to 100 and stop there.
Worked example 1.1.1
What number comes straight after 47?

Method. The number after is the next number when we count on one.

  1. Start at the number. We begin where we are.
    47
  2. Count on one. The next number is one more.
    47 + 1 = 48
  3. Write the answer.
    48

Check. Count back one from 48: you reach 47. It works.

Watch out. The number after is one bigger, not the same number again.

Worked example 1.1.2
What number comes straight after 69?

Method. The number after is the next number when we count on one.

  1. Start at the number. We begin where we are.
    69
  2. Count on one. The next number is one more.
    69 + 1 = 70
  3. Write the answer.
    70

Check. Count back one from 70: you reach 69. It works.

Watch out. The number after is one bigger, not the same number again.

Worked example 1.1.3
What number comes straight after 99?

Method. The number after is the next number when we count on one.

  1. Start at the number. We begin where we are.
    99
  2. Count on one. The next number is one more.
    99 + 1 = 100
  3. Write the answer.
    100

Check. Count back one from 100: you reach 99. It works.

Watch out. The number after is one bigger, not the same number again.

Watch out

Watch out. Thirty and forty are not the same. After 39 comes 40, not 30.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Count forwards from 0 to 100 in tens, then ones. Aim for a count without stopping. Ask: “What comes after 59?”

Counting backwards

Level 2
Count backwards from any number up to 100, Say the number before any number up to 100
Video lesson: Counting backwardsComing soon

We can also count backwards. Each number is one less than the number after it.

To find the number before, take one away.

Key ideas

  • Counting backwards means each number is one less.
  • The number before 60 is 59.
  • Do not say the number you start with again.
Worked example 1.2.1
What number comes just before 60?

Method. The number before is the number we say just before this one.

  1. Start at the number. We begin where we are.
    60
  2. Count back one. The number before is one less.
    60 - 1 = 59
  3. Write the answer.
    59

Check. Count on one from 59: you reach 60. It works.

Watch out. The number before is one less. Do not say the same number.

Worked example 1.2.2

Method. The number before is the number we say just before this one.

  1. Start at the number. We begin where we are.
    81
  2. Count back one. The number before is one less.
    81 - 1 = 80
  3. Write the answer.
    80

Check. Count on one from 80: you reach 81. It works.

Watch out. The number before is one less. Do not say the same number.

Worked example 1.2.3

Method. The number before is the number we say just before this one.

  1. Start at the number. We begin where we are.
    31
  2. Count back one. The number before is one less.
    31 - 1 = 30
  3. Write the answer.
    30

Check. Count on one from 30: you reach 31. It works.

Watch out. The number before is one less. Do not say the same number.

Watch out

Watch out. The number before 40 is 39. Do not say 30.

Level 2
Count in steps of 2, 5 and 10, Fill in the missing numbers in a count
Video lesson: Counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10Coming soon

We can count in steps. Instead of going up by one, we go up by 2, 5 or 10.

Look at the step between two numbers. Then count on the same step to fill the gaps.

Key ideas

  • Counting in 10s: 10, 20, 30 ...
  • Counting in 5s: 5, 10, 15 ...
  • Counting in 2s: 2, 4, 6 ...
Worked example 1.3.1
Fill in the missing numbers in steps of 5: 40, __, 50, __, 60

Method. The numbers go up in steps of 5. Find the step first.

  1. Find the step. Each number is 5 more than the one before.
    40, 45, 50
  2. Count on in steps to fill the gaps. Add the step to the number before each gap.
    40, 45, 50, 55, 60
  3. Write the missing numbers.

Numbers from 20 to 100

Level 2
Read and write numerals from 20 to 100, Read and write number words from 20 to 100
Video lesson: Numbers from 20 to 100Coming soon

Numbers from 20 to 100 have a tens part and a ones part.

The tens word tells you the tens digit. For example, forty is 4 tens, so it is 40.

Key ideas

  • The tens digit is written first.
  • Twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety.
  • A hyphen joins the tens word and the ones word, for example forty-six.
Worked example 1.4.1
Write the number sixty-three as a numeral.

Method. Find the tens first, then the ones.

  1. Find the tens word. The tens word tells us how many tens.
    sixty = 6 tens
  2. Find the ones word. The ones word tells us the ones digit.
    three = 3
  3. Write the numeral. Tens digit first, then ones digit.
    63

Check. Say 63 as a number name to check: sixty-three.

Watch out. Write the tens digit first. Seventy-four is 74, not 47.

Worked example 1.4.2
Write the number 29 in words.

Method. Say the tens part, then the ones part.

  1. Find the tens part. The tens digit gives the tens word.
    2 tens = twenty
  2. Find the ones part. The ones digit gives the last word.
    9 ones: nine ones
  3. Write the name. Put a hyphen between the tens word and the ones word.
    twenty-nine

Check. Read the name back: twenty-nine is 29.

Watch out. Use a hyphen between tens and ones, for example forty-six.

Worked example 1.4.3
Write the number 80 in words.

Method. Say the tens part, then the ones part.

  1. Find the tens part. The tens digit gives the tens word.
    8 tens = eighty
  2. Find the ones part. The ones digit gives the last word.
0 ones: no ones, so there is no hyphen
  3. Write the name. Put a hyphen between the tens word and the ones word.
    eighty

Check. Read the name back: eighty is 80.

Watch out. Use a hyphen between tens and ones, for example forty-six.

Watch out

Watch out. Thirteen is 13, but thirty is 30. Check the tens digit first.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Say the number names out loud. Count in tens, then add the ones. Write the number as a numeral.
