Exercise P Do you remember?
Non-calculatorMethod. Read the label on the coin. The label tells you its value.
- Look at the coin. Each coin has its value written on it.10p
- Read the value. Say the value out loud.10p
- Write the answer. 10p
Check. Check the coin list: 10p is the value of this coin.
Watch out. A 1p coin is 1 penny. A £1 coin is worth 100p.
Method. Add the coins one at a time. Keep a running total.
- Add 10p. Keep a running total: 10p.10p
- Add 5p. Keep a running total: 15p.15p
- Add 1p. Keep a running total: 16p.16p
- Write the total. This is the value of all the coins.16p
Check. Add in a different order to check: the total is still 16p.
Watch out. Count the biggest coins first. Then add the smaller coins.
Method. There are 100 pence in one pound. Change the pounds to pence, then add the pence.
- Change the 2 pounds to pence. One pound is 100 pence.2 x 100 = 200
- Add the pence. Add the pence that are left over.200 + 50 = 250
- Write the answer. The total is in pence.250p
Check. 250p is 2 pounds and 50 pence.
Watch out. Do not write £1.35 as 135p in the wrong order. The pounds come first.
Method. Count how many 5p are in 20p. Divide the total by the coin.
- Look at one 5p coin. Each coin is 5p.5p
- Count the coins needed. Add 5p again until you reach 20p.20 / 5 = 4
- Write the answer. 4
Check. 4 x 5 = 20. It works.
Watch out. Count the coins in steps of the coin value, for example 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.
Method. Count on from the price to the amount paid. The steps you count are the change.
- Start at the price, 12p. That is what the item costs.12p
- Count on to 20p. The steps you count are the change.12p + 8p = 20p
- Write the change. This is the money you get back.8p
Check. 12p and 8p together make 20p.
Watch out. Change is the money you get back, not the price of the item.
Coins and their values
In the UK we use pence (p) and pounds (£). There are 100 pence in one pound.
The coins are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2. The notes are £5, £10 and £20.

Different ways to make the same amount
The same amount can be made from different coins.
For example, 10p can be made from one 10p coin, or from two 5p coins, or from five 2p coins.
Key ideas
- Different coins can make the same amount.
- Check that each way adds up to the amount.
- Use different coins each time.
Method. Use different coins each time. Check that each way adds up to the total.
- Start with the biggest coin that fits. Big coins make fewer coins.20p = 20p
- Find a different way. Use other coins that still make the total.10p + 10p = 20p
- Write the two ways. Both ways make the same amount.Accept any two different ways, such as 20p or 10p + 10p
Check. Add each set of coins to check: both make 20p.
Watch out. The coins must be different, not just the same coins in a different order.
Method. Count how many 2p are in 10p. Divide the total by the coin.
- Look at one 2p coin. Each coin is 2p.2p
