Coins: names and values

Reception
Name and match coins, Say which coin is worth more

Sam has some coins to buy a snack. Each coin has a value written on it. The value tells us how much it is worth.

We use p for pence: 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p. We use £ for pounds: £1 and £2. The bigger the value, the more the coin is worth. Size is not the same as value.

Coins drawn to read, not to real size: 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p.

Key ideas

  • Read the value on the coin.
  • £1 and £2 are worth more than the pence coins.
  • Size does not show value.
