Units of measure, time and money

Edexcel 1MA1: N13
Grade 1-5

We measure length in millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m) and kilometres (km); mass in grams (g), kilograms (kg) and tonnes; and capacity (how much a container holds) in millilitres (ml), centilitres (cl) and litres. These are metric units, which means they are linked by 10, 100 and 1000. The most useful facts are: 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 km = 1000 m, 1 kg = 1000 g, 1 tonne = 1000 kg, 1 litre = 1000 ml = 100 cl.

km× 1000÷ 1000m× 100÷ 100cm× 10÷ 10mm
The length ladder. Going down to a smaller unit: multiply. Going up to a bigger unit: divide. (Decimal quantities such as 2.5 kg = 2500 g are converted in the same way.)

Converting. Changing to a smaller unit gives a bigger number, so multiply: 2.5 kg = 2.5 × 1000 = 2500 g. Changing to a bigger unit gives a smaller number, so divide: 3450 m = 3450 ÷ 1000 = 3.45 km. Always write the unit after the number, and make sure that every quantity in a calculation is in the same unit before you add, subtract or compare.

Time. There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week. Time is not in tens, so 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes (0.5 × 60 = 30), not 1 hour 50 minutes. The 12-hour clock uses am (midnight to noon) and pm (noon to midnight). The 24-hour clock goes from 00:00 to 23:59, so 7:05 pm is 19:05. To find how long something takes, count on in stages: to the next hour, then whole hours, then the minutes.

Money. £1 = 100p. Write amounts in pounds with two decimal places (£3.60, not £3.6). To compare or calculate, use pounds throughout or pence throughout, never a mixture.

Reading scales. First find how much each small division is worth: take the difference between two labelled marks and divide by the number of gaps between them. On the ruler below each small mark is 1 mm.

0123456789101112cm
The blue bar ends 3 small marks after the 7 cm mark, so its length is 7 cm 3 mm = 73 mm = 7.3 cm.

Speed. A compound measure combines two units. Speed = distance ÷ time, so a car that travels 90 km in 1.5 hours has a speed of 90 ÷ 1.5 = 60 kilometres per hour (km/h). The time must be in hours, so change minutes to hours by dividing by 60. You will meet more compound measures in Chapter 16.

Key ideas

  • Metric facts: 1 cm = 10 mm, 1 m = 100 cm, 1 km = 1000 m, 1 kg = 1000 g, 1 tonne = 1000 kg, 1 litre = 1000 ml.
  • To a smaller unit: multiply. To a bigger unit: divide.
  • Time: 60 s = 1 min, 60 min = 1 h. 1.5 h = 1 h 30 min. For 24-hour times add 12 to pm hours.
  • Use the same unit for every quantity before calculating.
  • Speed = distance ÷ time (time in hours for km/h).
Worked example 1.8.1
Change 2.5 kg into grams.

Key words. A unit says what we measure in. Metric units are based on 10, 100 and 1000, so converting means multiplying or dividing by powers of 10.

Method. To change units, use the conversion fact. Change to a smaller unit: multiply. Change to a bigger unit: divide.

  1. Write down the conversion fact. We need to know how many of the smaller unit make one of the bigger unit.
    1 kg = 1000 g
  2. Decide: kg to g means changing to a smaller unit, so multiply. A smaller unit means you need more of them. For example 2 kg is 2000 g. So we multiply by 1000.
    2.5 kg × 1000
  3. Calculate.
    2.5 × 1000 = 2500
  4. Write the answer with its unit. Always put the new unit in the answer.
    2.5 kg = 2500 g

Check. Convert back: 2500 ÷ 1000 = 2.5. ✓

Watch out. Check the direction: there are always more of the smaller unit. If your answer for centimetres is smaller than the number of metres, you divided when you should have multiplied.

Worked example 1.8.2
Change 3450 m into kilometres.

    1 km = 1000 m
  2. Decide: m to km means changing to a bigger unit, so divide. A bigger unit means you need fewer of them. For example 2000 m is only 2 km. So we divide by 1000.
    3450 m ÷ 1000
  3. Calculate. Dividing by 10, 100 or 1000 moves each digit to the right.
    3450 ÷ 1000 = 3.45
  4. Write the answer with its unit. Always put the new unit in the answer.
    3450 m = 3.45 km

Check. Convert back: 3.45 × 1000 = 3450. ✓

Watch out. Check the direction: there are always more of the smaller unit. If your answer for centimetres is smaller than the number of metres, you divided when you should have multiplied.

Worked example 1.8.3
A train leaves at 09:45 and arrives at 13:20. How long is the journey?

Method. Count on in stages: to the next hour, then whole hours, then the remaining minutes. Then add up.

  1. Count on from 09:45 to the next whole hour, 10:00. Counting to the next hour gives an easy place to start. 60 minutes make an hour, so subtract the minutes from 60.
    60 − 45 = 15 minutes
  2. Count the whole hours from 10:00 to 13:00.
    3 hours
  3. Count on from 13:00 to 13:20.
    20 minutes
  4. Add the parts together. Total the hours, then total the minutes. If the minutes reach 60 or more, change 60 minutes into 1 hour.
    15 minutes + 3 hours + 20 minutes
    Minutes: 15 + 20 = 35
    Total: 3 hours 35 minutes

Check. Add the journey time to the start: 09:45 + 3 hours 35 min = 13:20. ✓

Watch out. There are 60 minutes in an hour, not 100. So 10:40 to 11:10 is 30 minutes, not 70.

Watch out

Time is not decimal. 2.5 hours is 2 hours 30 minutes, not 2 hours 50 minutes, and 1 hour 20 minutes is not 1.2 hours. Also check you multiply (not divide) when you go to a smaller unit.
