Joining ideas with and

Year 1
Join words and ideas with and

We can join two ideas with the word and. This makes one sentence instead of two short ones.

Two sentences: Sam has a ball. Sam has a book. Joined: Sam has a ball and a book. The word and joins the two things. There is only one full stop, at the end.

A kitchen is a good place to join ideas with and: bread and butter.
and
A ball and a book.
Sam has a ball and a book. He reads on Monday. Mia has a bat and a ball.

Read the box above. You will use it in the questions.

Key ideas

  • The word and joins two ideas or two things.
  • A joined sentence has one full stop at the end.
  • Write a repeated name only once.
  • Ordinary words stay small, even when they are joined with and.
