Making new rhymes

Year 1
Make new rhymes
A woodland, where leaves fall in autumn.

Poets choose rhyme words so their lines sound good together. You can make a new rhyme too. Keep the ending the same, and change the first letter or letters.

Take day. Change the d to p and you get play. Change the d to s and you get say. All three end in -ay, so they rhyme.

Read Autumn Leaves. The last words of lines 1 and 2 rhyme: down and town. Lines 5 and 6 rhyme too: round and ground.

Autumn Leaves
Red and gold, the leaves fall down.
Off they float across the town.
Crunch, crunch, we stamp and play,
Kick them up and shout, “Hooray!”
The wind goes whoosh, the leaves go round,
Then they rest on the ground.
A tree losing its leaves. Some leaves are in the air, and some are on the ground.

Key ideas

  • To make a new rhyme, keep the ending the same.
  • Change the first letter or letters to make new words, like hop, mop and top.
  • A new line can end with a word that rhymes with the line before it.
  • Read your new rhyme aloud. Does it sound right?
Worked example 9.5.1
Write a word that rhymes with hop.

Key words. To make a new rhyme means to find another word that ends with the same sound.

Method. To make a new rhyme, keep the ending the same and change the start of the word.

  1. Say hop and listen to its ending. The ending is the part that sounds the same as the rhyme.
    hop → -op
  2. Keep the ending the same. A rhyme word must end with -op.
    keep -op
  3. Change the start and write a new word. A new first letter makes a new word with the same ending.
    top

Check. Say hop and top out loud. They end with the same sound. Also correct: top, mop, stop, pop or shop. ✓

Watch out. Change only the start of the word. Changing the end stops the word from rhyming with hop.

Worked example 9.5.2
Write a word that rhymes with down.
Keep the ending thesame.

Key words. To make a new rhyme means to find another word that ends with the same sound.

Method. To make a new rhyme, keep the ending the same and change the start of the word.

    down → -own
  2. Keep the ending the same. A rhyme word must end with -own.
    keep -own
  3. Change the start and write a new word. A new first letter makes a new word with the same ending.
    town

Check. Say down and town out loud. They end with the same sound. Also correct: town, brown or crown. ✓

Watch out. Change only the start of the word. Changing the end stops the word from rhyming with down.

Worked example 9.5.3
Finish the line so it rhymes with ground
?Read the whole lineto check it.
: We skip and jump and turn ___.

Method. Keep the rhyme word and its ending, then find the word that fits the line.

  1. Look at the rhyme word. Ground ends with -ound.
    ground → -ound
  2. Find a word that ends the same. Around ends with -ound too.
    around → -ound
  3. Write the word in the line. Read the whole line to check it makes sense.
We skip and jump and turn around.

Check. Read the line aloud. around and ground rhyme. ✓

Watch out. Check that the new word fits the meaning of the line, not only the rhyme.

Watch out

Watch out: when you change a word to make a rhyme, change only the start. Hop becomes top, not tip. Changing the end breaks the rhyme.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Pick a word from the poem, such as day. Ask your child to change the first letter to make a new word that rhymes, then say it aloud. Try a few: hop, mop, stop. Your child can then make up a silly line that ends with one of them.
