Tens and ones

Year 1
Tens and ones to 100, Read and write numbers to 100 in numerals
Tens are bundles of ten, like packs in a shop.

Every number to 100 is made of tens and ones. A ten is a long bar with ten squares on it. A one is a single small square. Ten ones make one ten.

The number 47 has 4 tens and 7 ones. The tens go on the left. The ones go on the right.

The number 47: 4 tens (long bars) and 7 ones (small squares).

Key ideas

  • A ten is a bundle of ten ones.
  • The tens digit goes on the left.
  • The ones digit goes on the right.
  • 100 is ten tens and no ones.
Worked example 6.3.1
How many tens and ones are in 35?

Key words. A ten is a bundle of ten ones. A one is a single thing.

Method. Count the groups of ten first. Then count the ones left over.

  1. Count the tens in 35. Each group of ten is one ten.
    30 is 3 tens
  2. Count the ones left over. The ones are what is left after the tens.
    35 − 30 = 5 ones
  3. Write the answer.
    3 tens and 5 ones

Check. Put them back together: 30 + 5 = 35. ✓

Watch out. The tens come first when you say the number. 25 is 2 tens and 5 ones, not 5 tens and 2 ones.

Worked example 6.3.2
Write the number for 6 tens and 2 ones.

Method. Start with the tens, then add the ones.

  1. Write 6 tens. The tens go on the left.
    6 tens = 60
  2. Add 2 ones. The ones go on the right, after the tens.
    60 + 2 = 62
  3. Write the number.
    62

Check. Read it back: 62 has 6 tens and 2 ones. ✓

Watch out. The tens digit goes on the left. Write 6 tens and 2 ones as 62, not 26.

Worked example 6.3.3
How many tens are there in 100?

Method. Count how many groups of ten there are.

  1. Count the groups of ten in 100. Count in tens: 10, 20 and so on.
    10 tens = 100
  2. Check the ones left over. The ones are not tens, so they do not count here.
    0 ones left over
  3. Write the answer. The number of tens is the number on the left.
    10

Check. 10 tens and 0 ones make 100. ✓

Watch out. Count the tens, not the ones. For 90, there are 9 tens and 0 ones.

Watch out

Watch out: the tens digit goes on the left. 25 has 2 tens and 5 ones. It does not have 5 tens and 2 ones.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Put 10 pasta shapes or buttons in a cup. The cup is one ten. Keep the loose ones on the table. Ask: “How many cups? How many loose ones?”
