Multiplying and dividing fractions, and decimals

Year 6
Multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers (Year 5), Multiply simple pairs of proper fractions, giving the answer in its simplest form (Year 6), Divide proper fractions by whole numbers; associate a fraction with division and find decimal equivalents (Year 6)
Story. A jug holds 3/4 of a litre of juice. The class has 8 jugs of the same size and needs to know how much juice that is in total. Later, a teacher shares 3/4 of a litre equally between 6 cups.

Rule

To multiply a fraction by a whole number, multiply the top and keep the bottom. Then simplify.

To multiply two fractions, multiply the tops and multiply the bottoms, then simplify.

To divide a fraction by a whole number, keep the top and multiply the bottom by the whole number.

A fraction is a division: 4/5 means 4 ÷ 5 = 0.8.

Key ideas

  • Fraction × whole number: multiply the top.
  • Fraction × fraction: multiply the tops and the bottoms.
  • Fraction ÷ whole number: multiply the bottom.
  • A fraction can be written as a decimal by making the bottom 10, 100 or 1000.
Worked example 3.5.1
Work out 3/4 × 8.

Method. Multiply the top by 8, then simplify.

  1. Multiply the top number by the whole number. 3 × 8 = 24, so the top becomes 24.
    3 × 8 = 24
  2. Simplify the fraction. Divide the top and the bottom by 4.
    24/4 = 6
  3. Write the answer.
    6

Check. 8 ÷ 4 = 2 and 2 × 3 = 6. ✓

Watch out. Simplify 24/4 to get a whole number: 6.

Worked example 3.5.2
Work out 2/3 × 3/5. Give the answer in its simplest form.

Method. Multiply the tops, multiply the bottoms, then simplify.

  1. Multiply the top numbers. 2 × 3 = 6.
    2 × 3 = 6
  2. Multiply the bottom numbers. 3 × 5 = 15.
    3 × 5 = 15
  3. Simplify. Divide the top and bottom by 3.
    6/15 = 2/5
  4. Write the answer.
    2/5

Check. 6/15 = 2/5 when both are divided by 3. ✓

Worked example 3.5.3
Work out 3/4 ÷ 6.

Method. Keep the top, and multiply the bottom by 6.

  1. Keep the top number the same. The top stays at 3.
    3
  2. Multiply the bottom number by the whole number. Sharing into 6 equal parts makes each part 6 times smaller.
    4 × 6 = 24
  3. Simplify. Divide the top and bottom by 3.
    3/24 = 1/8
  4. Write the answer.
    1/8

Check. 1/8 × 6 = 6/8 = 3/4. ✓
