The unit method and percentages of a whole

Year 6
Use the unit method for proportion, including percentages as a proportion of a whole (Year 5-6)
Story. A bakery sells 3 packs of biscuits for £7.50. A café wants 5 of the same packs. The café also wants to know what percentage of the pupils at a school are girls.

Rule

The unit method works out the value of one unit first, then multiplies to find the amount you want.

A percentage of a whole is the part divided by the whole, multiplied by 100: 90 out of 240 is 90/240 × 100 = 37.5%.

Key ideas

  • Unit method: find one unit first, then multiply.
  • Percentage of a whole = part ÷ whole × 100.
  • Percentages are out of 100, so 50% is one half.
Worked example 5.5.1
Three packs of biscuits cost £7.50. How much do 5 packs cost?

Method. Find the cost of one pack, then the cost of 5 packs.

  1. Find the cost of one pack. £7.50 ÷ 3 = £2.50.
    £2.50
  2. Find the cost of 5 packs. £2.50 × 5 = £12.50.
    £12.50
  3. Write the answer.
    £12.50

Check. £12.50 ÷ 5 = £2.50. ✓

Worked example 5.5.2
A school has 240 pupils. 90 of them are girls. What percentage of the pupils are girls?

Method. Write the part as a fraction of the whole, then as a percentage.

  1. Write the part as a fraction of the whole. 90 out of 240.
    90/240
  2. Multiply by 100 to get a percentage. Percent means out of 100.
    90/240 × 100 = 37.5%
  3. Write the answer.
    37.5%

Check. 90 ÷ 240 = 0.375, and 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%. ✓

Worked example 5.5.3
Ali scores 36 out of 48 in a test. What percentage did he score?

Method. Write the score as a fraction of the total, then multiply by 100.

  1. Write the part as a fraction of the whole. 36 out of 48.
    36/48
  2. Multiply by 100 to get a percentage. Percent means out of 100.
    36/48 × 100 = 75%
  3. Write the answer.
    75%

Check. 36 ÷ 48 = 0.75, which is 75%. ✓
