Use Standard English verb forms in writing: we were, you were, I did, I saw, Use the past participle after have or has, such as have gone
Story. Ali and Mia are writing a story about a trip to the seaside. In the story, Mia says, "We was up early." Ali checks the sentence. In the story itself, they write: "We were up early."

When we talk, we use many local ways of speaking, and these are part of who we are. In writing, we use Standard English verb forms. This table shows the most common changes.

  • Use the past form saw, came or gave on its own, without have or has.
  • After have or has, use the past participle: have gone, have seen.
  • In your own writing, use Standard English verb forms.
