Words ending -ation

Year 5
Spell words ending -ation, with the e dropped or the -ate changed (SP5)
Story. The class is planning a visit to the science museum. Each child writes one sentence about their observation, their exploration and their preparation. Tara notices that each noun ends in -ation.

Key pattern

If the verb ends in a silent e, drop the e and add -ation: prepare becomes preparation; observe becomes observation.

If the verb ends in -ate, change the -ate to -ation: create becomes creation; educate becomes education.

If the verb ends in a consonant, add -ation without any change: inform becomes information.

Key ideas

  • Drop the silent e before -ation: prepare, preparation.
  • Change -ate to -ation: create, creation.
  • -ation starts with a vowel, so the silent e is dropped.
  • Check the spelling with a dictionary if you are not sure.
