Multiplying by a two-digit number

Year 5
Multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit number, Grid method, Long multiplication with a place holder zero

To multiply by a two-digit number, such as 24, we multiply by the tens (20) and by the ones (4) and add the answers. The grid method shows this clearly. Split both numbers into place-value parts. Each box in the grid is one multiplication. For 36 × 24 there are four boxes: 30 × 20 = 600, 6 × 20 = 120, 30 × 4 = 120 and 6 × 4 = 24. Add them: 600 + 120 + 120 + 24 = 864.

36 × 24. The pieces are 600, 120, 120 and 24. (Not drawn to scale.)

Long multiplication is a neat way to write the same thing in columns. Work out the ones row first: 347 × 6. Then work out the tens row: 347 × 20. To do that, write a 0 in the ones column first (this is the place holder), then multiply 347 by 2. The zero is there because 20 is 2 tens, so the answer is a multiple of 10. Finally add the two rows.

×26
2082347 × 6
+6940347 × 20
9022
347 × 26. The first row is 347 × 6. The second row is 347 × 20, with the orange 0 as place holder. Add the rows to get 9,022.

Estimate first. Round each number to one digit followed by zeros: 347 is about 300 and 26 is about 30, so the answer should be about 300 × 30 = 9,000. The answer 9,022 is close, so it is sensible. If you multiply by a multiple of 10, such as 40, multiply by 4 and then by 10.

Key ideas

  • Grid method: partition both numbers, multiply every part by every part, add all the boxes.
  • Long multiplication: row 1 is the number × the ones digit. Row 2 is the number × the tens digit, with a 0 place holder first. Add the rows.
  • Row 2 is worth tens, so it always ends in 0.
  • To multiply by 30, 40, 50…: multiply by 3, 4, 5… then by 10.
  • Always estimate first by rounding both numbers to one digit followed by zeros.
Worked example 4.4.1
Work out 36 × 24 using the grid method.

Key words. To partition a number is to split it into parts, such as 47 = 40 + 7. A partial product is the answer to one part of a multiplication. The grid method (or area method) puts the parts in a table and multiplies each one.

Method. Split both numbers into place-value parts. Multiply every part by every part (one box each), then add all the boxes.

  1. Partition both numbers. Split each number into its place-value parts.
    36 = 30 + 6
    24 = 20 + 4
  2. Draw the grid. Put the parts of 36 across the top and the parts of 24 down the side. Each box is one multiplication.
    30??6??204
  3. Multiply to fill every box. Multiply the digits, then count the zeros of BOTH numbers and put them back.
    30 × 20: 3 × 2 = 6, then 2 zeros.  600
    6 × 20: 6 × 2 = 12, then 1 zero.  120
    30 × 4: 3 × 4 = 12, then 1 zero.  120
    6 × 4 = 24
  4. Write the partial products in the grid. There is one answer for every box.
    30600120612024204
  5. Add along each row. First add the boxes in each row.
    Row 20: 600 + 120 = 720
    Row 4: 120 + 24 = 144
  6. Add the row totals. Now add the two rows together.
    720 + 144 = 864
  7. Write the answer.
    36 × 24 = 864

Check. Estimate: 36 is about 40; 24 is about 20. 40 × 20 = 800. Our answer, 864, is close to 800. ✓

Watch out. Count the boxes: (number of parts in the top number) × (number of parts in the side number). Missing one box gives a wrong answer. And keep the zeros.

Worked example 4.4.2
Work out 253 × 32 using the grid method.

    253 = 200 + 50 + 3
    32 = 30 + 2
  2. Draw the grid. Put the parts of 253 across the top and the parts of 32 down the side. Each box is one multiplication.
    200??50??3??302
  3. Multiply to fill every box. Multiply the digits, then count the zeros of BOTH numbers and put them back.
    200 × 30: 2 × 3 = 6, then 3 zeros.  6,000
    50 × 30: 5 × 3 = 15, then 2 zeros.  1,500
    3 × 30: 3 × 3 = 9, then 1 zero.  90
    200 × 2: 2 × 2 = 4, then 2 zeros.  400
    50 × 2: 5 × 2 = 10, then 1 zero.  100
    3 × 2 = 6
  4. Write the partial products in the grid. There is one answer for every box.
    2006,000400501,5001003906302
  5. Add along each row. First add the boxes in each row.
    Row 30: 6,000 + 1,500 + 90 = 7,590
    Row 2: 400 + 100 + 6 = 506
  6. Add the row totals. Now add the two rows together.
    7,590 + 506 = 8,096
  7. Write the answer.
    253 × 32 = 8,096

Check. Estimate: 253 is about 300; 32 is about 30. 300 × 30 = 9,000. Our answer, 8,096, is close to 9,000. ✓

Watch out. Count the boxes: (number of parts in the top number) × (number of parts in the side number). Missing one box gives a wrong answer. And keep the zeros.

Worked example 4.4.4
Work out 46 × 37 using long multiplication.

Key words. Long multiplication is a written method for multiplying by a number with two or more digits. You multiply by each digit of the second number on its own row, then add the rows. A place holder zero goes at the end of the tens row, because that row is worth tens.

Method. Multiply by the ones digit on one row. Write a 0 place holder, then multiply by the tens digit on the next row. Add the two rows.

  1. Split the multiplier. Multiplying by 37 means multiplying by 7 and by 30, then adding. Write the numbers in columns.
    37 = 30 + 7, so 46 × 37 = (46 × 7) + (46 × 30)
    46
    ×37
  2. Row 1: multiply by the 7 (the ones digit). This is short multiplication, starting with the ones. Work out 46 × 7.
    Ones: 6 × 7 = 42. Write 2 and carry 4.
    Tens: 4 × 7 = 28, and 28 + 4 (carried) = 32. Write 2 and carry 3.
    Hundreds: nothing left to multiply. Write the carried 3.
    Row 1 = 322
    46
    ×37
    32246 × 7
  3. Row 2: write a 0 first, then multiply by the 3. The 3 is really 30, so this row is worth tens. The 0 in the ones column is a place holder. Now multiply 46 by 3.
    Write 0 in the ones column.
    Ones: 6 × 3 = 18. Write 8 and carry 1.
    Tens: 4 × 3 = 12, and 12 + 1 (carried) = 13. Write 3 and carry 1.

  4. Add the two rows. The sum of the rows is the answer, because 26 = 20 + 6.
    46
    ×37
    32246 × 7
    +138046 × 30
    1702

    322 + 1,380 = 1,702
  5. Write the answer.
    46 × 37 = 1,702

Check. Estimate: 46 is about 50; 37 is about 40. 50 × 40 = 2,000. Our answer, 1,702, is close to 2,000. ✓

Watch out. Do not forget the 0 place holder on the second row. Without it you are multiplying by 3, not by 30, and the answer is ten times too small.

Worked example 4.4.9
A school orders 28 boxes of pencils. Each box has 144 pencils. How many pencils is that?

Key words. Long multiplication is a written method for multiplying by a number with two or more digits. You multiply by each digit of the second number on its own row, then add the rows. A place holder zero goes at the end of the tens row, because that row is worth tens.

Method. Draw a bar model, choose the operation, then work it out.

  1. Draw a bar model. A table shows how the amounts match up.

  3. Split the multiplier. Multiplying by 28 means multiplying by 8 and by 20, then adding. Write the numbers in columns.
    28 = 20 + 8, so 144 × 28 = (144 × 8) + (144 × 20)
    144

  7. Write the answer. Include the unit.
    4,032 pencils

Check. Estimate: 144 is about 100; 28 is about 30. 100 × 30 = 3,000. Our answer, 4,032, is a bit more than 3,000. ✓

Watch out. Do not forget the 0 place holder on the second row. Without it you are multiplying by 2, not by 20, and the answer is ten times too small.

Watch out

Do not forget the 0 place holder in the second row! Without it you are multiplying by 2 instead of 20, and the answer is ten times too small. Also, do not multiply only the tens digit by the tens digit: every part must be multiplied by every part (four boxes for 36 × 24, not two).
