Measuring angles in degrees

Year 5
Know that angles are measured in degrees: estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles

An angle is the amount of turn between two lines that meet at a point. We measure angles in degrees, using the symbol °. A full turn is 360°. A half turn is 180°. A quarter turn is 90°, and a quarter turn is a right angle.

TypeSizeWhat it looks like
Acuteless than 90°a sharp, narrow corner
Rightexactly 90°a square corner, like the corner of a book
Obtusemore than 90° but less than 180°wider than a corner, but not flat
Reflexmore than 180° but less than 360°the big outside of a turn

Key ideas

  • An acute angle is less than 90°.
  • A right angle is exactly 90°.
  • An obtuse angle is more than 90° and less than 180°.
  • A reflex angle is more than 180° and less than 360°.
  • Estimate an angle by comparing it with a right angle, and a straight line.
40°
An acute angle: it is less than a right angle.
125°
An obtuse angle: it is bigger than a right angle but smaller than a straight line.
240°
A reflex angle: it is bigger than a straight line.
Worked example 9.2.1
Is an angle of 115° acute, right, obtuse or reflex?

Key words. An acute angle is less than 90°. A right angle is exactly 90°. An obtuse angle is more than 90° and less than 180°. A reflex angle is more than 180° and less than 360°.

Method. Compare the size of the angle with 90°, 180° and 360° to find its type.

  1. Compare the angle with a right angle. A right angle is 90°.
    115° > 90°
  2. Compare the angle with a straight line. A straight line is 180°.
    115° < 180°
  3. Name the type of angle. An angle more than 90° and less than 180° is obtuse.
    obtuse
  4. Write the answer. So the angle 115° is obtuse.
    obtuse

Check. 115° is between 90° and 180°, so it is obtuse. ✓

Watch out. Look at the number of degrees, not at how long the arms look.

Worked example 9.2.2
Is an angle of 260° acute, obtuse or reflex?

Key words. An acute angle is less than 90°. A right angle is exactly 90°. An obtuse angle is more than 90° and less than 180°. A reflex angle is more than 180° and less than 360°.

Method. Compare the size of the angle with 90°, 180° and 360° to find its type.

  1. Compare the angle with a straight line. A straight line is 180°.
    260° > 180°
  2. Compare the angle with a full turn. A full turn is 360°.
    260° < 360°
  3. Name the type of angle. An angle more than 180° and less than 360° is reflex.
    reflex
  4. Write the answer. So the angle 260° is reflex.
    reflex

Check. 260° is between 180° and 360°, so it is reflex. ✓

Watch out. Look at the number of degrees, not at how long the arms look.

Worked example 9.2.3
Ali says 180° is an obtuse angle. Is he right?

Key words. An acute angle is less than 90°. A right angle is exactly 90°. An obtuse angle is more than 90° and less than 180°. A reflex angle is more than 180° and less than 360°.

Method. Compare 180° with the types of angle.

  1. Compare with a right angle. An obtuse angle is bigger than 90°.
    180° > 90°
  2. Compare with a straight line. An obtuse angle must be smaller than 180°. A straight line is exactly 180°.
180° is not less than 180°
  3. Write the answer. An angle of exactly 180° is a straight line, not an obtuse angle.
No, 180° is a straight angle

Check. Obtuse angles are less than 180°, so 180° cannot be obtuse. ✓

Watch out. 180° is a straight line, so it is not obtuse.

Watch out

A common mistake is to judge an angle by how long its arms look. Only the number of degrees matters. Also, 180° is not obtuse: it is a straight line.
