Classifying shapes, and proving or disproving

Year 6
Compare and classify triangles and quadrilaterals by their properties, and explain (Year 5-6), Prove or disprove a geometric statement with a reason (Year 5-6)
Story. Mr Hughes asks his class to sort shapes into groups. Some children say "a square is always a rhombus", and others say "an isosceles triangle must be equilateral". He asks them to prove or disprove each statement.

Rule

A rectangle has four right angles and opposite sides equal. A square is a rectangle with four equal sides. A rhombus has four equal sides. A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides. A trapezium has one pair of parallel sides.

To disprove a statement, find one example where it is false.

Key ideas

  • A square is a special rectangle and a special rhombus.
  • An isosceles triangle has two equal sides, and an equilateral triangle has three.
  • To disprove a statement, give one counter-example.
Worked example 5.4.1
Is a square always a rhombus? Write always, sometimes or never.

Method. A rhombus has four equal sides, and a square has four equal sides.

  1. Check the sides. A square has four equal sides.
    4 equal sides
  2. Compare with a rhombus. A rhombus has four equal sides, so every square is a rhombus.
    always
  3. Write the answer.
    always

Check. A square has four equal sides. ✓

Worked example 5.4.2
Sam says: "An isosceles triangle is always equilateral." Is Sam right? Write yes or no.

Method. Find an isosceles triangle that is not equilateral.

  1. Pick a triangle. A triangle with sides 5, 5 and 7 has two equal sides.
    5, 5, 7
  2. Check it is not equilateral. Its sides are not all equal, so it is not equilateral.
    not equilateral
  3. Write the answer.
    no

Check. The triangle 5, 5, 7 is isosceles, not equilateral. ✓

Worked example 5.4.3
Which quadrilateral has exactly one pair of parallel sides? Choose parallelogram or trapezium.

Method. Know which quadrilateral has one pair of parallel sides.

  1. Parallelogram. A parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides.
    two pairs
  2. Trapezium. A trapezium has exactly one pair of parallel sides.
    one pair
  3. Write the answer.
    trapezium

Check. One pair of parallel sides is a trapezium. ✓

Watch out

Watch out. A square is always a rhombus, but a rhombus is not always a square.

Exam tip

Practice guide. To disprove a statement, one counter-example is enough.

Exercise 5D  Practice: classifying and proving

Non-calculator
1
FWhich shape has four equal sides but not four right angles? Choose one: rectangle, rhombus or square.
2
FTick the statements that are true for a rectangle. Options: Opposite sides are equal | All sides are equal | All angles are 90 degrees | The diagonals bisect each other. Write the options you would tick, in the order given.
3
RA parallelogram always has two pairs of equal sides. Write always, sometimes or never. Choose one: always, sometimes or never.
4
RA triangle has at most one right angle. Write always, sometimes or never. Choose one: always, sometimes or never.
5
RAn isosceles triangle is equilateral. Write always, sometimes or never. Choose one: always, sometimes or never.
6
RIs a square a rectangle? Write yes or no.
7
RDisprove this statement: "All triangles have a right angle." Give an example.
8
RProve or disprove: "A quadrilateral with four equal sides must be a square." Give a counter-example.
9
PSThe angles of a triangle are 2x, 3x and 4x degrees. Find x.
10
FTriangle ABC has angles 50, 50 and 80 degrees. What is the largest angle, in degrees?
11
RWhich triangle is it: angles 30, 60 and 90 degrees? Choose one: right-angled and scalene, equilateral or isosceles and acute.
12
RSam says a parallelogram is always a rectangle. Is he right? Explain with a shape.
13
RA quadrilateral has two pairs of equal sides, and its angles are not all equal. Is it a kite or a rectangle? Write kite or rectangle.
