Paper B

Year 6
A full practice paper in the mixed style of the Year 6 reasoning test, drawn from chapters 1 to 8 (Year 5-6)
Practice material. Do this without a calculator. This is practice in the style of the Year 6 maths reasoning test. It is not the official test, and no official test item is used. Marks and timings are a practice guide only.
Story. This is the second practice paper. It is a little harder than Paper A, and several items ask for an explanation or a tick. Take your time, and check each answer before you move on.

How to use this paper

Work without a calculator. Show your working. Explain items need one clear reason in words.

Timing guide (practice guide only, not the official test): about 22 minutes for this paper, with Paper A.

Key ideas

  • Read the question twice, and check what it asks for.
  • Check the units in the answer, such as pounds, cm or degrees.
  • A tick question can have more than one correct option.
Worked example 9.2.1
Share 90 stickers between two people in the ratio 1:2. How many does the person with 2 parts get?

Method. Find the total parts, then one part, then the share.

  1. Total parts. 1 + 2 = 3.
    3
  2. One part. 90 / 3 = 30.
    30
  3. Share. 2 x 30 = 60.
    60
  4. Write the answer.
    60

Check. 30 + 60 = 90. ✓

Worked example 9.2.2
Ben says the mean of 3, 9 and 12 is 9, because 9 is in the middle. Explain whether he is right.

Method. Work out the mean by adding and dividing.

  1. Total. 3 + 9 + 12 = 24.
    24
  2. Mean. 24 / 3 = 8, not 9.
    8
  3. Write the answer.
    No, the mean is 8.

Check. 8 x 3 = 24. ✓

Worked example 9.2.3
Tick the options that are equal to 0.5: 1/2, 5/10, 0.05, 50%, 2/5.

Method. Check each option by changing it to the same form.

  1. Check each. 1/2 = 0.5; 5/10 = 0.5; 0.05 is not 0.5; 50% = 0.5; 2/5 = 0.4.
    0.5 for three options
  2. Tick the true ones. Tick 1/2, 5/10 and 50%.
    1/2, 5/10, 50%
  3. Write the answer.
    1/2, 5/10, 50%

Check. Three options equal a half. ✓
