KS2 Science textbook

Chapter 4: Habitats, change and food chains

  • Strand Living things and their habitats
  • Level Year 4
  • Practice 84 questions with step-by-step solutions

National Curriculum for England, Key Stage 2 science, Year 4. Content: LH3: recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things, A3: construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey.

Open Year 4 chapter

By the end of this chapter you will be able to

  • Give examples of natural and human changes to a habitat
  • Explain how a change in the environment can be a danger to living things, using a pond survey
  • Read a food chain, and say which living thing is the producer, the prey and the predator
  • Draw a food chain with arrows that point from the food to the eater
  • Explain that a food chain starts with a plant, because plants make their own food
  • Predict what would happen in a food chain if one living thing were removed

You should already know

  • Habitats, and how living things depend on each other (Year 2 Science, Chapter 3)
  • Animals need food to live, and they cannot make their own food (Year 3 Science, Chapter 5)

Where this leads

  • Classification keys, to name the living things in a habitat (Year 4 Science, Chapter 3)
  • Food chains in more detail, and the food webs of a habitat (Year 5 and Year 6 Science)
