Year 6 Science: How the eye works
Part of the Year 6 Science how we see chapter. Chapter overview · whole chapter on one page
How the eye works
The eye is an organ that receives light. Light enters the eye through the pupil, which is the opening in the middle. The lens focuses the light onto the retina at the back of the eye. The retina has light-sensitive cells, which send signals along the optic nerve to the brain. The brain then interprets the signals, so we see the object.
The table names the main parts of the eye.
| Part of the eye | What it does |
|---|---|
| Pupil | the opening that light enters the eye through; it gets smaller in bright light |
| Lens | focuses the light onto the back of the eye |
| Retina | the layer at the back of the eye, with light-sensitive cells |
| Optic nerve | carries signals from the retina to the brain |
Key ideas
- Light enters the eye through the pupil.
- The lens focuses the light onto the retina.
- The retina sends signals along the optic nerve to the brain.
- The pupil gets smaller in bright light and bigger in dim light.
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. The lens focuses the light onto the retina.lens
- Write the word. So the part is the lens.lens
- Write the answer. lens
Check. The lens works like the lens in a camera. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. The optic nerve carries signals from the retina to the brain.optic nerve
- Write the words. So the part is the optic nerve.optic nerve
- Write the answer. optic nerve
Check. The brain then tells us what we see. ✓
Method. Read the description.
- Read the description. The pupil gets smaller in bright light.smaller
- Write the word. So the pupil gets smaller.smaller
- Write the answer. smaller
Check. A smaller pupil lets less light in. ✓
Watch out
Watch out: the eye does not send light to the brain. Light enters the eye, and the retina sends signals to the brain.
Exam tip
Exam tip. Name the eye part and say what it does: pupil lets light in, lens focuses it, retina senses it, optic nerve carries signals.
Try it (with your teacher, or a grown-up at home). Look at your eyes in a mirror in a dim room, then in a brighter room, with a grown-up. Notice whether the dark centre gets bigger or smaller. Do not look at a bright light for a long time, and never look at the Sun.
Exercise 8D How the eye works
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. The pupil is the opening that light enters the eye through.pupil
- Write the answer. pupil
Check. The pupil is in the middle of the eye. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. The lens focuses the light onto the back of the eye.focuses
- Write the answer. focuses the light
Check. Focusing makes the image sharp. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. The retina is the layer at the back with light-sensitive cells.retina
- Write the answer. retina
Check. The retina sends signals to the brain. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. The optic nerve carries signals from the retina to the brain.optic nerve
- Write the answer. optic nerve
Check. The brain interprets the signals. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read the lens row. The lens focuses the light onto the retina.retina
- Write the answer. retina
Check. The retina is at the back of the eye. ✓
Method. Read the description.
- Read the description. The pupil gets bigger in dim light, so more light can enter.bigger
- Write the answer. bigger
Check. More light enters through a bigger pupil. ✓
Method. Check the text.
- Check the text. The retina sends signals, not light, along the optic nerve.signals
- Decide. So the answer is no.no
- Write the answer. no
Check. Signals carry the information to the brain. ✓
Method. Check the table.
- Check the table. The pupil is the opening; the lens does the focusing.lens focuses
- Decide. So Ali is not right.no
- Write the answer. no
Check. Each part has its own job. ✓
Method. Use the description.
- Use the description. In bright light, the pupil gets smaller.smaller
- Write the word. So the pupil gets smaller.smaller
- Write the answer. smaller
Check. A smaller pupil protects the retina from too much light. ✓
Method. Follow the path of light.
- Follow the path. Light enters through the pupil, then passes through the lens.pupil, lens
- Write the answer. So the parts are the pupil and then the lens.pupil, lens
- Write the answer. pupil, lens
Check. The retina is the next part. ✓
Method. Think about focusing.
- Think about the light. Light from the object spreads, and the lens brings it to a point.point
- Think about the image. So the image is sharp on the retina.sharp
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says the lens focuses the light, so the image is sharp on the retina.
Check. A focused image is clear. ✓
Method. Think about light.
- Think about the dim room. Some light reaches the eye in a dim room.some light
- Think about the dark. In the dark, no light reaches the retina, so we cannot see.no light
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says there is some light in a dim room for the eye to receive, but in the dark there is none.
Check. Seeing needs light. ✓
Method. Think about the amount of light.
- Think about the pupil. A smaller pupil lets in less light.less light
- Think about the retina. So the retina is protected from too much light.protected
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says a smaller pupil lets in less light, so the retina receives less light that could damage it.
Check. The pupil controls how much light enters. ✓
