Year 6 Science: More bulbs in a loop
Part of the Year 6 Science components, switches and circuit symbols chapter. Chapter overview · whole chapter on one page
More bulbs in a loop
Bulbs can be joined one after another in a row, in the same loop. This is called joining them in series.
When two bulbs are in a row with one cell, the voltage is shared between them. Each bulb gets less current, so each one is dimmer than a single bulb with the same cell.
The table compares the brightness of the bulbs, rated out of 5, with two cells.
| Circuit | Brightness rating (out of 5) |
|---|---|
| 2 cells, one bulb | 4 |
| 2 cells, two bulbs in a row (each bulb) | 2 |
Key ideas
- Bulbs in a row in one loop share the voltage between them.
- Each bulb in a row gets less current, so each one is dimmer.
- One bulb on its own in the same loop is brighter.
- Adding a bulb to a loop changes how bright all the bulbs in the loop are.
Method. Read the table.
- Read the row. One bulb with two cells is rated 4 out of 5.4
- Write the rating. So the rating is 4 out of 5.4 out of 5
- Write the answer. 4 out of 5
Check. The single bulb is brighter. ✓
Method. Subtract the two-bulb rating from the one-bulb rating.
- Read the ratings. One bulb is rated 4, and each of two bulbs is rated 2.4 and 2
- Subtract. The difference is 4 minus 2.4 - 2 = 2
- Write the answer. 2 points
Check. 2 + 2 = 4. ✓
Method. Think about the voltage.
- Think about the voltage. The voltage is shared between the two bulbs.shared
- Think about the current. So each bulb gets less current, which makes it dimmer.less current
- Write the answer. the voltage is shared, so each bulb gets less current
Check. Sharing the voltage makes each bulb dimmer. ✓
Watch out
Watch out: two bulbs in a row do not each get the full voltage. The voltage is shared, so each bulb is dimmer than a single bulb.
Exam tip
Exam tip. When you explain a bulb being dimmer, say that the voltage is shared, so less current flows through each bulb.
Try it (with your teacher, or a grown-up at home). With a teacher, make a loop with one cell and one bulb. Note the brightness. Then add a second bulb in a row, and compare the brightness of both bulbs. Discuss why the bulbs are dimmer. Use ratings out of 5, and keep the cell the same.
Exercise 10C More bulbs in a loop
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. One bulb is rated 4 out of 5.4
- Write the answer. 4
Check. One bulb is the brightest. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. Each of two bulbs in a row is rated 2 out of 5.2
- Write the answer. 2
Check. Each bulb is dimmer in the row. ✓
Method. Subtract.
- Read the ratings. One bulb is 4 and each bulb in a row is 2.4 and 2
- Subtract. The difference is 4 minus 2.4 - 2 = 2
- Write the answer. 2
Check. 2 + 2 = 4. ✓
Method. Read the table.
- Read the table. The row of bulbs is rated 2, and one bulb is rated 4.2 and 4
- Decide. So the bulbs in a row are dimmer, and the answer is yes.yes
- Write the answer. yes
Check. Sharing the voltage makes each bulb dimmer. ✓
Method. Compare the ratings.
- Compare. One bulb is rated 4, and each bulb in a row is rated 2.4 and 2
- Decide. So one bulb on its own is brighter.one bulb
- Write the answer. one bulb
Check. The single bulb has the full voltage. ✓
Method. Read the idea.
- Read the idea. When bulbs are joined in a row, the voltage is shared between them.shared
- Decide. So the answer is yes.yes
- Write the answer. yes
Check. Each bulb gets part of the voltage. ✓
Method. Read the definition.
- Read the definition. Bulbs joined one after another in the same loop are joined in series.in series
- Write the answer. in series
Check. Series means one after another. ✓
Method. Subtract the two ratings.
- Read the ratings. The single bulb is 4, and each bulb in the row is 2.4 and 2
- Subtract. The difference is 2 points.4 - 2 = 2
- Write the answer. 2
Check. Each bulb loses 2 points of brightness. ✓
Method. Check the rule.
- Check the rule. Sharing the voltage makes each bulb dimmer, not brighter.dimmer
- Decide. So Ruby is not right.no
- Write the answer. no
Check. Adding a bulb makes both dimmer. ✓
Method. Compare the ratings.
- Compare the ratings. One bulb is 4, but each bulb in a row is 2.4 and 2
- Decide. So the bulbs are dimmer, and Ali is not right.no
- Write the answer. no
Check. The bulbs are dimmer in a row. ✓
Method. Think about the voltage and the current.
- Think about the voltage. The voltage is shared between the two bulbs.shared
- Think about the current. Less current flows through each bulb, so each is dimmer.less current
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says the voltage is shared between the two bulbs, so less current flows through each one.
Check. Less current means dimmer. ✓
Method. Think about the cell.
- Think about the cell. The same cell has to supply both bulbs.supply both
- Think about each bulb. So each bulb receives less voltage and current.less
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says the same cell has to light two bulbs, so each one receives less voltage and current.
Check. Sharing the same energy reduces each bulb's share. ✓
Method. Think about the voltage.
- Think about the cells. More cells give a higher total voltage.higher voltage
- Think about the bulbs. With more voltage, each bulb in the row gets more and is brighter.brighter
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says adding more cells raises the total voltage, so each bulb can receive more voltage and be brighter.
Check. Voltage shared between bulbs can be increased with more cells. ✓
