Greater, less and the signs

Level 1
Compare numbers up to 20, Use more, fewer, greater and less, Use the signs < > =

We can compare two numbers. The greater number is bigger. The less number is smaller.

The sign > means greater than. The sign < means less than. The sign = means equal.

The open end of the sign always faces the bigger number. The point faces the smaller one.

Key ideas

  • Greater means bigger. Less means smaller.
  • > means greater than.
  • < means less than.
  • = means the same as.
Worked example 3.4.1
Write <, > or = in the box: 8 □ 13

Method. Compare the two numbers.

  1. Say the two numbers. Eight and thirteen.
    8 and 13
  2. Compare them. 13 comes later, so it is bigger.
    8 is less than 13
  3. Choose the sign. The point faces the smaller number, 8.
    <

Check. The sign faces the smaller number. 8 < 13 is right.

Watch out. The point of the sign always faces the smaller number.

Worked example 3.4.2
Write <, > or = in the box: 15 □ 9

Method. Compare the two numbers.

  1. Say the two numbers. Fifteen and nine.
    15 and 9
  2. Compare them. 15 comes later, so it is bigger.
    15 is greater than 9
  3. Choose the sign. The open end faces the bigger number.
    >

Check. The open end faces 15. 15 > 9 is right.

Watch out. The open end of the sign faces the bigger number.

Worked example 3.4.3
Write <, > or = in the box: 6 □ 6

Method. Look at both numbers.

  1. Say the two numbers. Six and six.
    6 and 6
  2. Check whether they are the same. They are the same amount.
    6 is equal to 6
  3. Choose the sign. Equal means the same.
    =

Check. Both numbers are 6, so the sign is =.

Watch out. Use = only when the two numbers are the same.

Watch out

Watch out. The sign does not care about the size of the symbol. Look at which number is bigger.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Use two groups of counters. Ask: “Which group has more?” Then show the sign that matches the answer.
