Adding and subtracting within 1000

Level 3
Add and subtract within 1000, with carrying and exchange, in columns, Solve addition and subtraction problems

Line up the hundreds, tens and ones. Add or subtract from the ones first.

Carry a ten when the ones make 10 or more. Exchange a ten when the ones on top are too small.

Key ideas

  • Work from the ones.
  • Carry when you add, and exchange when you subtract.
  • Check by estimating or adding back.
Worked example 10.2.1
Work out 386 + 275.

Method. Add the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds. Carry any ten or hundred you make.

  1. Write the numbers in columns. Keep the ones under the ones and the tens under the tens.
    386 over 275
  2. Add the ones. The ones make 10 or more, so write the ones digit and carry 1 ten.
    6 + 5 = 11, write 1 and carry 1
  3. Add the tens. Add the carried ten with the tens. The tens make 10 or more, so write the tens digit and carry 1 hundred.
    8 + 7 + 1 carried = 16
  4. Add the hundreds. Add any carried hundred too.
    3 + 2 + 1 carried = 6
  5. Write the answer. Read the columns from left to right.
    661

Check. Check: 661 - 275 = 386.

Watch out. When the tens make 10 or more, carry a hundred to the hundreds column.

Worked example 10.2.2
Work out 432 - 187.

Method. Subtract the ones first. If the top digit is too small, exchange from the next column, then subtract.

  1. Write the numbers in columns. Keep the ones under the ones and the tens under the tens.
    432 over 187
  2. Exchange 1 ten for 10 ones. The ones on top (2) are fewer than the ones below (7), so we need more ones.
3 tens become 2 tens, and the ones go from 2 to 12
  3. Exchange 1 hundred for 10 tens. The tens on top are fewer than the tens below (8 tens), so we need more tens.
4 hundreds become 3 hundreds, and 2 tens become 12 tens
  4. Subtract the ones. 12 - 7 = 5.
    12 - 7 = 5
  5. Subtract the tens. 12 - 8 = 4.
    12 - 8 = 4
  6. Subtract the hundreds. 3 - 1 = 2.
    3 - 1 = 2
  7. Write the answer. Read the columns from left to right.
    245

Check. Check: 245 + 187 = 432.

Watch out. When a column is too small, exchange one from the column to its left. Ten ones make one ten, ten tens make one hundred.

Worked example 10.2.3
Sam has 178 stickers. Amira gives Sam 56 more. How many stickers does Sam have now?

Method. Find the operation, then work out the total.

  1. Find the operation. We are putting two amounts together, so we add.
    178 + 56
  2. Work out the total. Use column addition with the ones first.
    178 + 56 = 234
  3. Write the answer. This is the total in the question.
    234

Check. Check: 234 - 56 = 178.

Watch out. Look for words like more, altogether and in all. These mean add.

Watch out

Watch out. Do not forget a carried ten when you add. Do not forget to exchange when you subtract.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “Are the ones big enough? Did you carry or exchange?” before the child writes the answer.
