My five senses

Year 1
Name the five senses, Match each sense to its body part
A kitchen. We use our senses here every day.

We have five senses. A sense helps us find out about the things around us. Each sense uses a part of the body:

See with your eyes. Hear with your ears. Smell with your nose. Taste with your tongue. Touch with your skin, which covers your whole body.

The five senses. Each one has the body part that we use for it.

Key ideas

  • See: we use our eyes.
  • Hear: we use our ears.
  • Smell: we use our nose.
  • Taste: we use our tongue.
  • Touch: we use our skin.
Worked example 6.4.1
Which sense do we use with our eyes?

Key words. A sense is a way of finding out about things, using a part of your body.

Method. Look at the body part. Think about what it helps you do.

  1. Look at the body part. The eyes are part of your body.
    eyes
  2. Think about what it helps you do. We use the eyes to see.
    eyes = see
  3. Write the sense.
    see

Check. Say it as a sentence: We use the eyes to see. ✓

Watch out. Use the word that says what the body part does, such as see, hear or smell.

Worked example 6.4.2
Which body part do we use to smell?

Key words. A sense is a way of finding out about things. Smell uses the nose.

Method. Think about what the sense helps you do. Then find the body part that does it.

  1. Think about the sense. We use our smell to find out about things.
    smell
  2. Find the body part. We use the nose to smell.
    nose
  3. Write the answer.
    nose

Check. Say it as a sentence: We use the nose to smell. ✓

Watch out. Each sense has its own body part. Do not use the ears for smelling.

Worked example 6.4.3
Which sense do you use with your tongue?

Method. Think about which sense lets you know a food tastes sweet.

  1. Think about tasting. We use our tongue to taste food.
    tongue
  2. Match the sense. The sense we use with the tongue is taste.
    tongue = taste
  3. Write the answer.
    taste

Check. Say it as a sentence: We use the tongue to taste. ✓

Watch out. Taste is done by the tongue, not by the nose. The nose smells.

Watch out

Watch out: smell is done with your nose, and taste is done with your tongue. Do not mix them up. You can smell a cake before you taste it.

Try it at home

With a grown-up, shake a box of dry pasta or tap a spoon on a pan. Close your eyes and guess what made the sound. Then open your eyes and check.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Let your child use the sound game to match the sense (ears) to the sound. Then ask: “Which sense did you use to guess?” Keep the words see, hear, smell, taste and touch in every sentence.
