My head, neck and face

Year 1
Name the parts of the head and face, Name the teeth and hair
A classroom. Look at the pictures to learn about your body and your senses.

Your head is the round top part of your body. It sits on your neck. Your neck holds your head up, and it lets you turn your head to look around. Hair grows on the top of your head.

On the front of your head is your face. Your face has two eyes to see with, two ears on the sides, a nose in the middle to smell with, and a mouth below your nose. Inside your mouth are your teeth, which help you chew.

ABCDEFGH
A face with a letter for each part. The same letters are used in the questions.

Key ideas

  • The head is the round top part of your body, on top of your neck.
  • Your face has two eyes, two ears, one nose and one mouth.
  • Your teeth are inside your mouth, and they help you chew.
  • Your hair grows on your head.
Worked example 6.1.1
Look at the picture. Which letter shows the eyes?
ABCDEFGH

Key words. Eyes means the two parts you see with.

Method. Find the eyes on the face picture. Each part has its own letter.

  1. Find the eyes. The eyes is the two parts you see with.
Look for the eyes on the picture
  2. Read the letter next to it. Each part has one letter. Check you have the letter on this part.
    eyes: letter B
  3. Write the answer.
    B

Check. Point to the eyes with your finger. The letter by it is B. ✓

Watch out. Check that the letter is on the eyes, not on a part next to it.

Worked example 6.1.2
How many eyes are on the face in the picture?
ABCDEFGH

Method. Count the eyes on the face, one at a time.

  1. Look at the face. Find the eyes. There is one on each side of the nose.
a left eye and a right eye
  2. Count them. Touch each eye once, so you do not count one twice.
    1, 2
  3. Write the answer. The number you counted is how many eyes there are.
    2 eyes

Check. Close one eye. Can you still see? Open it again. You have two eyes. ✓

Watch out. Count the eyes, not the eyebrows. Each eye is one thing.

Worked example 6.1.3
Which part of your body joins your head to your body?

Method. Find the part that joins the head to the body.

  1. Look at your head. Your head sits on top of your body.
    head on top
  2. Find the part between them. The neck is between the head and the body. It joins them.
    neck joins head and body
  3. Write the answer. The neck holds your head up.
    neck

Check. Touch your neck. Turn your head from side to side. ✓

Watch out. Do not say shoulder. The shoulders are lower down, next to the neck.

Watch out

Watch out: your teeth are inside your mouth. They are not on your lips. Your hair grows on your head, but it does not help you with any of your five senses.

Try it at home

With a grown-up, look in a mirror together. Touch each part and say its name: head, neck, hair, face, eyes, ears, nose, mouth and teeth. Ask your grown-up to check you have found them all.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask your child to point to each part on their own face, then on yours. Say the names clearly. Some children find “teeth” and “hair” easy to mix up with the other parts, so check those two carefully.
