Order of operations and mixed problems

Year 6
Use the order of operations: brackets, then division and multiplication, then addition and subtraction (Year 6), Solve problems combining these (Year 5-6)
Story. Ali buys three packs of six pencils and four single pencils. He writes 3 × 6 + 4 on his paper, and the order he does the sums in matters.

Rule

Work out brackets first. Then do multiplication and division, working from left to right. Then do addition and subtraction, working from left to right.

So 3 + 4 × 5 is 3 + 20 = 23, not 35.

Key ideas

  • Brackets first, then multiply and divide, then add and subtract.
  • Multiplication and division are done before addition and subtraction.
  • Work from left to right when the operations are the same.
  • Check by estimating: the answer should be about right.
Worked example 1.5.1
Work out 3 + 4 × 5.

Method. Multiplication is done before addition.

  1. Multiply first. Do 4 × 5 before adding 3.
    4 × 5 = 20
  2. Add the 3. Now add 3 to 20.
    3 + 20 = 23
  3. Write the answer.
    23

Check. Not (3 + 4) × 5 = 35: the brackets are missing from the question. ✓

Watch out. Without brackets, the multiplication is done first, so the answer is 23.

Worked example 1.5.2
Work out (8 + 4) ÷ 3 × 2.

Method. Brackets first, then division and multiplication from left to right.

  1. Do the brackets. 8 + 4 = 12 inside the brackets.
    (8 + 4) = 12
  2. Divide. Then 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
    12 ÷ 3 = 4
  3. Multiply. Finally 4 × 2 = 8.
    4 × 2 = 8
  4. Write the answer.
    8

Check. Working left to right after the brackets gives the same answer. ✓

Worked example 1.5.3
Work out 20 - 3 × 4 + 6.

Method. Multiply before you add and subtract, and then go from left to right.

  1. Multiply. 3 × 4 = 12 is done first.
    20 - 12 + 6
  2. Subtract. Then 20 - 12 = 8.
    8 + 6
  3. Add. Finally 8 + 6 = 14.
    14
  4. Write the answer.
    14

Check. The multiplication comes before the subtraction and addition. ✓

Watch out. Doing the subtraction first gives 17 × 4 + 6 = 74, which is wrong.
