Possession with plural owners

Year 4
Put the apostrophe after the s when a plural owner ends in s, as in the foxes' dens, Add apostrophe and s when a plural owner does not end in s, as in the men's voices, Explain how many owners there are, and where the apostrophe goes
Story. The school hall is full of work from every class. The pupils' books are on one table, and the children's drawings cover the walls. The teachers' room is at the end of the corridor.

Sometimes the owner is more than one. Then the apostrophe goes in a different place.

If the plural owner ends in s, put the apostrophe after the s: the foxes' dens is the dens of more than one fox. No extra s is added.

If the plural owner does not end in s, add apostrophe and s: the men's voices is the voices of more than one man.

  • A plural owner that does not end in s: add apostrophe and s, as in the men's voices.
  • Count the owners first, then look at the last letter of the owner word.
  • Check the owner, not the thing: the teachers' room belongs to more than one teacher.
