KS2 Maths textbook

Year 4 Perimeter, Area and Measures: lesson and practice

  • Strand Measurement
  • Level Year 4
  • Practice 143 questions with step-by-step solutions

National Curriculum for England, Key Stage 2 mathematics, Year 4. Content: Read scales on rulers, weighing scales and measuring jugs, including scales with different step sizes, Measure length to the nearest centimetre and millimetre, Convert between different units of measure: kilometre to metre, metre to centimetre, centimetre to millimetre, kilogram to gram, litre to millilitre, Write simple decimals of measures, for example 2.5 m = 250 cm, Estimate, compare and calculate different measures; choose a sensible unit, Measure and calculate the perimeter of a rectilinear figure (including squares) in centimetres and metres, Find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares.

Open Year 4 chapter

By the end of this chapter you will be able to

  • Read rulers to the nearest centimetre and millimetre, and write a length in cm and mm, in mm or as a decimal of a cm
  • Read weighing scales, measuring jugs and other scales, working out what each small mark is worth
  • Change between km and m, m and cm, cm and mm, kg and g, and litres and millilitres, in both directions
  • Use simple decimals of measures, like 2.5 m = 250 cm and 1.5 kg = 1,500 g
  • Compare and order measures in different units, and choose a sensible unit or estimate
  • Add and subtract measures, and solve measure word problems
  • Find the perimeter of squares, rectangles and L-shapes, including shapes with missing sides
  • Find the area of a shape by counting squares, and use rows and columns for rectangles

You should already know

  • Place value and rounding (Chapter 1)
  • Column addition and subtraction (Chapter 2)
  • Times tables and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 (Chapters 3 and 4)
  • Halves, quarters, tenths and hundredths as decimals (Chapters 5 and 6)

Where this leads

  • Time: hours, minutes and seconds (Chapter 8)
  • Shapes and symmetry (Chapter 9)
  • Converting units and the area of rectangles in Year 5
  • Volume and area of triangles in Year 6
