KS2 Maths textbook
Year 6 Ratio and Proportion: lesson and practice
- Strand Ratio and proportion
- Level Year 6
- Practice 100 questions with step-by-step solutions
By the end of this chapter you will be able to
- Write a ratio in the right order, in the form a:b, and simplify it by dividing by the HCF
- Find equivalent ratios, and find a missing number by finding the scale
- Find a missing number in a ratio by dividing, when the known number is the bigger one
- Find the scale factor for similar shapes, and use it to find new lengths
- Share an amount unequally in a ratio, and find one share from another
- Work out totals for groups, such as packs and bags, where each group has a ratio in it
You should already know
- Multiples, factors and the highest common factor (Year 6, Chapter 3)
- Equivalent fractions and simplifying (Year 6, Chapter 4)
- Fractions of amounts, with the top number and the bottom number (Year 6, Chapter 4)
- Multiplying and dividing whole numbers, with the bus-stop and short methods (Year 6, Chapter 2)
Where this leads
- Algebra, where ratios and formulae use letters for unknown numbers (Year 6, Chapter 8)
- Measures and scale, such as maps and recipes (Year 6, Chapter 9)
- Pie charts, where the angles share a whole in a ratio (Year 6, Chapter 12)
Lessons in this chapter
