SkillMethod
Column methodsAdd and subtract from the right, carrying and exchanging. Long multiplication uses partial products and a 0 place holder.
Long divisionDivide one digit at a time. The remainder is smaller than the divisor.
Order of operationsBrackets, then × and ÷, then + and −, from left to right.
Place value and roundingValue = digit × column value. Round up if the digit after the place is 5 or more.
Negatives and factorsIntervals across zero: add the two distances. HCF: biggest common factor. LCM: smallest common multiple.
Fractions and decimalsMake bottom numbers the same to add or subtract. Multiply by 10, 100, 1000 by moving digits left.
PercentagesFind 1 per cent (divide by 100), then multiply.
Ratio and proportionAdd the parts, find one part, then multiply each share by its number of parts.
AlgebraSubstitute, then multiply before you add. Undo the addition, then the multiplication, to solve.
Measures, area and volumeArea = base × height (triangle: ÷ 2). Volume = length × width × height.
Angles and circlesStraight line 180; point 360; triangle 180; quadrilateral 360. Circumference = 3.14 × diameter.
CoordinatesReflection changes one sign. Translation adds the movement to each number.
StatisticsPie angle = fraction × 360. Line change = end minus start. Mean = total ÷ number of values.

Can you…?

  • I can add, subtract, multiply and divide large numbers using written methods, and check my answers.
  • I can use the order of operations, including brackets, in a calculation.
  • I can find the value of a digit, round numbers, and work with negative numbers.
  • I can find common factors, common multiples and prime numbers.
  • I can add and subtract fractions, change between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and work with decimals.
  • I can find a percentage of an amount, and change between fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • I can share an amount in a ratio, and solve problems with formulae and sequences.
  • I can convert units, and find the area, perimeter and volume of shapes.
  • I can find missing angles, and reflect and translate points on a coordinate grid.
  • I can read pie charts and line graphs, and find the mean and a missing value.

Key terms

Carry
The 1 ten (or 1 hundred) moved into the next column when adding.
Exchange
Taking 1 from the next column to make ten more in the column you are working in, when subtracting.
Partial product
One row of a long multiplication.
Remainder
What is left over after dividing, and always smaller than the number you divide by.
Highest common factor (HCF)
The biggest number that divides exactly into two or more numbers.
Lowest common multiple (LCM)
The smallest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers.
Prime number
A number with exactly two factors: 1 and itself.
Ratio
A way of comparing two or more amounts, such as 2:3.
Formula
A rule written with letters, such as C = 5n + 3.
Mean
The average: the total divided by the number of values.
Scale factor
The number you multiply by to make a shape bigger or smaller.
Reflection
Flipping a shape over a line, so that each point is the same distance from the line on the other side.
Translation
Sliding a shape without turning it.
