Order of operations and brackets

Year 6
Use the order of operations, including brackets (Year 6), Solve multi-step problems using the four operations (Year 5-6)
Story. Mrs Okafor sells raffle tickets at the school fair. Adults pay 6 pounds and children pay 4 pounds. She writes a sum on the board to find the total, but first she must decide the order to work it out.

Rule

Work out brackets first. Then do multiplication and division (left to right). Then do addition and subtraction (left to right).

Brackets change the order. (2 + 3) x 4 = 20, but 2 + 3 x 4 = 14.

Key ideas

  • Brackets first, then x and divide, then add and subtract.
  • Work from left to right when the operations have the same priority.
  • A bracket can change the answer completely.
Worked example 1.3.1
Work out 12 + 8 x 3 - 4.

Method. Multiplication comes before addition and subtraction.

  1. Multiply first. 8 x 3 is done before adding.
    8 x 3 = 24
  2. Add and subtract from left to right. 12 + 24 = 36, then 36 - 4.
    12 + 24 - 4 = 32
  3. Write the answer.
    32

Check. 12 + 24 - 4 = 32. ✓

Worked example 1.3.2
Work out (12 + 8) x 3 - 4 / 2.

Method. Brackets first, then divide, then multiply and subtract.

  1. Work out the bracket. 12 + 8 = 20.
    (12 + 8) = 20
  2. Divide and multiply. Divide 4 by 2 and multiply 20 by 3.
    20 x 3 = 60 and 4 / 2 = 2
  3. Subtract. Take 2 from 60.
    60 - 2 = 58
  4. Write the answer.
    58

Check. (20 x 3) - 2 = 58. ✓

Worked example 1.3.3
Ticket sales: 4 adults pay 6 pounds each and 3 children pay 4 pounds each. Write one calculation for the total, then work it out.

Method. Work out each group, then add.

  1. Work out the adults. 4 x 6 = 24 pounds.
    24 pounds
  2. Work out the children. 3 x 4 = 12 pounds.
    12 pounds
  3. Add the two totals. Add the money from both groups.
    24 + 12 = 36 pounds
  4. Write the answer.
    36

Check. 4 x 6 + 3 x 4 = 36. ✓

Watch out

Watch out. 2 + 3 x 4 is 14, not 20. Multiply first, then add.

Exam tip

Practice guide. Underline the multiplication and division first, then do the sum from left to right.

Exercise 1C  Practice: order of operations

Non-calculator
1
FWork out 5 + 6 x 3.
2
FWork out 20 - 12 / 4.
3
FWork out (7 + 5) x 4.
4
FWork out 6 x (9 - 4) + 3.
5
FWork out 48 / (4 + 2) x 3 - 1.
6
PSWork out 100 - 3 x (2 + 8) + 5.
7
RPut one pair of brackets in 2 + 3 x 4 so that the answer is 20. Write the calculation with the brackets.
8
RWrite one pair of brackets in 10 - 4 / 2 + 1 so that the answer is 2. Write the calculation.
9
PSWork out 3 x 4 + 2 x 5 - 6 / 3.
10
PSA bag of 12 apples costs 3 pounds. Ravi buys 3 bags and pays 10 pounds. How much change does he get, in pounds?
11
PSWork out (25 - 7) x 5 / 6.
12
RTick the calculations that give an answer of 14. Options: 2 + 3 x 4 | (2 + 3) x 4 | 2 + 12 / 6 | 5 x 2 + 4 | 20 - 3 x 2. Write the options you would tick, in the order given.
