Chapter summary
| Skill | Method |
|---|---|
| Coordinates | Write (x, y): x across first, then y up or down. |
| Quadrants | First (+, +), second (-, +), third (-, -), fourth (+, -), anticlockwise. |
| Translation | Add the move to each coordinate. The shape keeps its size and shape. |
| Reflection in the x-axis | (x, y) becomes (x, -y). |
| Reflection in the y-axis | (x, y) becomes (-x, y). |
| Reflection in x = k | x becomes 2k - x; y stays the same. |
| Centre of a rectangle | Halfway between opposite corners: halve the sums of the coordinates. |
| Compass | Clockwise: North, East, South, West. A quarter turn is a right angle. |
Can you…?
- I can read and write coordinates in all four quadrants
- I can translate a shape and write its new coordinates
- I can reflect a shape in the x-axis, the y-axis and a line such as x = 3
- I can find a missing corner or the centre of a rectangle
- I can follow and give compass directions and quarter turns
Key terms
- origin
- the point (0, 0) where the x-axis and y-axis cross
- quadrant
- one of the four parts of a coordinate grid
- translation
- a slide of a shape, with no turn or flip
- reflection
- a flip of a shape over a mirror line
- mirror line
- the line a shape is reflected in
- quarter turn
- a turn of 90 degrees, which is a right angle
