Chapter summary
| Skill | Method |
|---|---|
| Totals and differences | Read the values from a table or chart; add for totals, subtract for differences. |
| Pie chart | The whole is 360 degrees. Angle = share x 360; number = angle / 360 x total. |
| Line graph change | Change = later reading - earlier reading. |
| Mean | Total of the values divided by the number of values. |
| Median | The middle value after ordering; for two middle values, halfway between them. |
| Mode | The value that appears most often. |
| Range | Largest value minus smallest value; smaller range means more consistent. |
| Valid conclusion | Only claim what the data show; a link does not prove a cause. |
Can you…?
- I can read a table or bar chart and add or subtract the values
- I can work out the angle or the number of pupils in a pie chart sector
- I can read a line graph and find the change between two readings
- I can find the mean, median, mode and range of a data set
- I can find a missing value when the mean is known
- I can compare two data sets and say whether a conclusion is valid
Key terms
- mean
- the total of the values divided by how many values there are
- median
- the middle value when the values are in order
- mode
- the value that appears most often
- range
- the largest value minus the smallest value
- sector
- a slice of a pie chart
- valid conclusion
- a conclusion that the data really support
