Year 3 Science: Muscles pull on bones
Part of the Year 3 Science skeletons and muscles chapter. Chapter overview · whole chapter on one page
Muscles pull on bones
A muscle is a part of the body that can get shorter and pull. When a muscle gets shorter, it contracts. When it gets longer again, it relaxes.
Muscles are joined to bones by strong cords called tendons. When a muscle contracts, it pulls on the bone through its tendon, and the bone moves.
A muscle can only pull. It cannot push. So one muscle can move a bone one way, and a different muscle must move it back the other way. Section 6.5 shows how this works in the arm.
Key ideas
- A muscle is a part of the body that contracts (gets shorter) to pull on a bone.
- A tendon is a strong cord that joins a muscle to a bone.
- A muscle relaxes when it gets longer again.
- A muscle can only pull. It cannot push.
Method. Think about the cord that joins a muscle to a bone.
- Read the chapter. A strong cord that joins a muscle to a bone is called a tendon.tendon
- Name it. So the word is tendon.tendon
- Write the answer. tendon
Check. The tendon pulls the bone when the muscle contracts. ✓
Watch out. A tendon is not a bone. It is the cord between the muscle and the bone.
Method. Think about what contract means.
- Read the word. Contract means to get shorter.contract = shorter
- Write the answer. So a contracting muscle gets shorter.shorter
- Write the answer. shorter
Check. A muscle that contracts pulls the bone. ✓
Method. Think about what a muscle can do.
- Read the chapter. A muscle can only pull. It cannot push.only pull
- Write the answer. So a muscle cannot push a bone.no
- Write the answer. no
Check. A different muscle pulls the bone back. ✓
Watch out
Watch out: a muscle does not push a bone back into place. A different muscle pulls the bone back the other way.
Try it at home or school (with a grown-up). With a grown-up, hold one arm out in front of you and make a loose fist. Slowly make a tight fist, then open it again. Feel the muscles in your forearm get harder and softer. Do not squeeze hard.
Exam tip
Grown-up tip. Ask: “Which part of your arm got harder when you made a fist? What is the muscle joined to?” Let your child use the words contract and relax.
Exercise 6D Muscles pull on bones
Method. Think about what contract means.
- Read the chapter. A muscle contracts when it gets shorter.shorter
- Write the answer. shorter
Check. Contract means get shorter. ✓
Method. Think about the cord between a muscle and a bone.
- Read the chapter. Muscles are joined to bones by tendons.tendon
- Write the answer. tendon
Check. A tendon is a strong cord. ✓
Method. Think about the word for getting longer again.
- Read the chapter. When a muscle gets longer again, it relaxes.relaxes
- Write the answer. relaxes
Check. A relaxed muscle is longer than a contracted one. ✓
Method. Think about what a contracting muscle does.
- Read the chapter. When a muscle contracts, it pulls on the bone through its tendon.pulls
- Write the answer. yes
Check. A contracting muscle pulls. ✓
Method. Think about what a muscle can do.
- Read the chapter. A muscle can only pull. It cannot push.only pull
- Write the answer. no
Check. A muscle can only pull. ✓
Method. Think about the cord that joins a muscle to a bone.
- Read the sentence. A muscle is joined to a bone by a tendon.tendon
- Write the answer. tendon
Check. The tendon is a strong cord. ✓
Method. Think about what relaxing does to a muscle.
- Read the sentence. When a muscle relaxes, it gets longer again.longer
- Write the answer. longer
Check. Relaxing is the opposite of contracting. ✓
Method. Think about what a muscle does to a bone.
- Read the chapter. When a muscle contracts, it pulls on the bone through its tendon.pulls
- Write the answer. pulls
Check. A muscle pulls. ✓
Method. Think about the muscle pulling the bone.
- Read the chapter. The muscle pulls on the bone through its tendon, and the bone moves.the bone moves
- Write the answer. true
Check. Muscles move bones. ✓
Method. Think about what a muscle can do.
- Read the chapter. A muscle can only pull. A different muscle pulls the bone back.only pull
- Write the answer. false
Check. A different muscle pulls the bone back. ✓
Method. Think about which one does the pulling.
- Think about the muscle. The muscle contracts and pulls on the bone through its tendon.the muscle pulls
- Decide. So the muscle pulls the bone, and the bone does not push the muscle.no
- Write the answer. No. Accept any reason that says the muscle pulls the bone through the tendon.
Check. Muscles pull on bones. ✓
Method. Look at the left picture, and the arrow on the bone.
- Read the arrow. The green arrow on the bone points up.arrow up
- Decide. So the bone moves up when the muscle contracts.up
- Write the answer. up
Check. The muscle pulls the bone up towards it. ✓
Method. Think about a safe way to test it with your own arm.
- Think about the arm. The muscle at the front of the upper arm works when the elbow bends.front of the upper arm
- Describe the method. Bend the elbow and feel the muscle get harder and thicker.feel it harder
- Write the answer. Accept any sensible method, such as: feel the muscle at the front of the upper arm as the elbow bends, and notice it gets harder and thicker.
Check. A test with your own body is safe, with a grown-up. ✓
Method. Think about what a tendon does.
- Think about the tendon. A tendon joins the muscle to the bone.joins
- Give the reason. So when the muscle contracts, it can pull on the bone.pull on the bone
- Write the answer. Accept any sentence that says the tendon joins the muscle to the bone, so the muscle can pull on the bone.
Check. The tendon passes the pull from the muscle to the bone. ✓
