Choosing a mechanism for a job

Year 5
F3: choose a mechanism to allow a smaller force to have a greater effect, and give reasons based on evidence
Story. Mr Patel asks the class: “Which machine would you use to lift a heavy box onto a shelf, to open a stiff jar, or to make a bicycle go up a hill?” Priya says: “I would use a lever for the jar, a pulley for the box, and gears for the hill.”

Every mechanism uses a smaller force to have a greater effect, in a different way:

ObjectMechanism usedWhat the smaller force does
a seesawlevera light child can lift a heavy child on the far end
a wheelbarrowlevera smaller push lifts a heavier load
a bicycle, with a small gear at the front and a large gear at the backgearsthe pedals turn the wheel with more force, though more slowly
a crane lifting a heavy load on a ropepulleya movable pulley shares the load between two ropes
leverpulleygears
Three everyday mechanisms: a lever on a pivot, a pulley with a rope, and two meshing gears.

Key ideas

  • A lever uses a long arm, so that a small effort can lift a load.
  • A movable pulley shares the load, so the effort is about half.
  • Gears with different numbers of teeth change the speed and effect of turning.
  • Choose the mechanism that fits the job, and give a reason.
Worked example 10.4.1
Look at the table in section 10.4. Which mechanism is used by a wheelbarrow? Write the word.

Method. Read the row for the wheelbarrow.

  1. Read the row. The wheelbarrow row says lever.
    lever
  2. Name the mechanism. So the mechanism is a lever.
    lever
  3. Write the answer.
    lever

Check. A wheelbarrow works like a lever on its wheel. ✓

Worked example 10.4.2
Which mechanism is used on a bicycle with a small gear and a large gear? Write the word.

Method. Read the row for the bicycle.

  1. Read the row. The bicycle row says gears.
    gears
  2. Name the mechanism. So the mechanism is gears.
    gears
  3. Write the answer.
    gears

Check. The bicycle’s gears change the effect of the pedals. ✓

Worked example 10.4.3
Which mechanism would be best for lifting a heavy load on a rope, so that the effort is about half? Write the word.

Method. Think about which mechanism shares the load.

  1. Think about the rope. A movable pulley shares the load between two parts of the rope.
    shares the load
  2. Name the mechanism. So the best mechanism is a pulley.
    pulley
  3. Write the answer.
    pulley

Check. A movable pulley halves the effort needed. ✓

Watch out

Watch out: a mechanism does not make the work disappear. A lever, a pulley or gears can make the effort smaller, but it often has to move further.

Try it (with your teacher or a grown-up). Make a lever with a ruler and a pencil, and a second lever with a longer ruler. With your teacher, use the same small weight to lift the same load on each. Which lever did it more easily? Write one sentence giving your reason.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “Which machine did the job more easily? Why do you think so?” Let your child give a reason based on what they saw.

8
RExplain why a lever is a good choice for opening a stiff jar. Write one sentence.
9
RWorking scientifically. Justify a choice. Write one reason why a movable pulley is better than no pulley for lifting a heavy box. Write one sentence.
10
RExplain why a crane needs pulleys, not just a plain rope. Write one sentence.
