Pulleys

Year 5
F3: recognise that a pulley allows a smaller force to have a greater effect, and that a fixed pulley changes only the direction of the force
Story. A builder lifts a heavy bucket up to the roof. “It is so much easier with the pulley,” she says. “The rope is pulled down, and the bucket goes up. And with the second pulley, I only need half the strength.”

A pulley is a wheel with a groove, which a rope runs over. There are two kinds that are useful for this chapter:

fixed pulleyeffort downmovable pulleyeffortthe load is shared by two ropes
Two pulleys: a fixed pulley only changes the direction of the pull, and a movable pulley shares the load between two ropes.

The table shows how many identical weights were needed to lift the same load, for three set-ups.

Set-upWeights needed to lift the same load
no pulley, lifting the load straight up8
a fixed pulley, fixed to a support8
a movable pulley, which moves with the load4

Key ideas

  • A fixed pulley changes the direction of the pull, but not the size of the effort.
  • A movable pulley shares the load between two ropes, so the effort is about half.
  • Pulleys help to lift heavy loads with less effort.
  • The pulley picture shows the effort pulling down, and the load going up.
Worked example 10.2.1
Look at the table in section 10.2. How many weights were needed with a movable pulley? Write the number.

Method. Find the movable pulley row.

  1. Find the row. The movable pulley row shows 4 weights.
    4 weights
  2. Read the number. So the answer is 4.
    4
  3. Write the answer.
    4

Check. A movable pulley needs about half the weights. ✓

Worked example 10.2.2
How many weights were needed with no pulley? Write the number.

Method. Find the no pulley row.

  1. Find the row. The no pulley row shows 8 weights.
    8 weights
  2. Read the number. So the answer is 8.
    8
  3. Write the answer.
    8

Check. The fixed pulley row also shows 8. ✓

Worked example 10.2.3
Work out how many fewer weights a movable pulley needs than no pulley. Write the number.

Method. Subtract the movable pulley number from the no pulley number.

  1. Read the two numbers. No pulley needs 8 weights, and a movable pulley needs 4.
    8 and 4
  2. Subtract. The difference is 8 minus 4, which is 4 weights fewer.
    8 - 4 = 4
  3. Write the answer.
    4

Check. Check: 4 + 4 = 8. ✓

Watch out

Watch out: a fixed pulley does not make the lift easier. It only changes the direction of the pull. Only a movable pulley shares the load.

Try it (with your teacher or a grown-up). With a grown-up, tie a rope to the back of a chair, and loop it over a broom handle or a wooden dowel that is held up. Pull the rope down to lift a small bag. Then tie the bag to a second loop of rope so that it moves with the bag. Compare how hard each one is to lift.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “Which set-up was easier? Did the pulley change the direction, or the size of the pull?” Keep the bag light and the set-up safe.

Exercise 10B  Pulleys

1
FWhat is a pulley? Write the word for a wheel with a groove that a rope runs over.
2
FWhich kind of pulley changes only the direction of the pull? Write the words: fixed or movable.
3
FWhich kind of pulley moves with the load, and shares the load between two parts of the rope? Write the words: fixed or movable.
4
FLook at the table in section 10.2. How many weights were needed with a fixed pulley? Write the number.
Set-upWeights needed to lift the same load
no pulley, lifting the load straight up8
a fixed pulley, fixed to a support8
a movable pulley, which moves with the load4
5
FLook at the table in section 10.2. How many weights were needed with a movable pulley? Write the number.
Set-upWeights needed to lift the same load
no pulley, lifting the load straight up8
a fixed pulley, fixed to a support8
a movable pulley, which moves with the load4
6
PSLook at the table in section 10.2. Is a movable pulley better than no pulley, for lifting? Write yes or no.
Set-upWeights needed to lift the same load
no pulley, lifting the load straight up8
a fixed pulley, fixed to a support8
a movable pulley, which moves with the load4
7
PSLook at the table in section 10.2. Which two set-ups needed the same number of weights? Write the two names.
Set-upWeights needed to lift the same load
no pulley, lifting the load straight up8
a fixed pulley, fixed to a support8
a movable pulley, which moves with the load4
8
FFill in the gap: a movable pulley means the effort needed is about ___ the load. Write one word.
9
PSLook at the pulley picture in section 10.2. Which pulley is labelled movable? Write the word.
fixed pulleyeffort downmovable pulleyeffortthe load is shared by two ropes
10
PSWorking scientifically. Predict what will happen. Predict whether a movable pulley will make a load feel heavier or lighter to lift. Write the word: heavier or lighter.
11
RExplain why a fixed pulley does not make a load easier to lift, although it is useful. Write one sentence.
12
RExplain why a movable pulley makes lifting easier. Write one sentence.
