Rounding to the nearest 10

Level 4
Round a number to the nearest 10 and say which multiple of 10 it is nearer to

To round to the nearest 10, look at the ones digit. Five or more rounds up to the next ten. Less than five rounds down.

Example: 4836 rounds up to 4840, because the ones digit 6 is 5 or more.

Key ideas

  • Look at the ones digit.
  • 5 or more: round up. Less than 5: round down.
  • The ones become 0 after rounding.
Worked example 2.4.1
Round 4836 to the nearest 10.

Method. Round to the nearest 10: look at the ones digit.

  1. Look at the ones digit. The ones digit tells us which ten it is nearer to.
    the ones digit is 6
  2. Decide: five or more. Six is five or more, so round up.
    6 is at least 5
  3. Round up to the next ten. Keep the same tens and add one more ten.
    4830 + 10 = 4840
  4. Write the answer. This is the nearest multiple of 10.
    4840

Check. Check: 4840 is a multiple of 10 and is 4 away from 4836.

Watch out. Exactly 5 rounds up.

Worked example 2.4.2
Round 7523 to the nearest 10.

Method. Round to the nearest 10: look at the digits to the right of the ten place.

  1. Look at the ones digit. The digits on the right tell us which way to go.
    the ones digit is 3
  2. Decide: less than 5. Half of 10 is 5. 5 or more rounds up; less than 5 rounds down.
    3 is less than 5
  3. Round down. Keep the same tens, and the digits to the right become 0.
    7523 rounds down to 7520
  4. Write the answer. This is the nearest multiple.
    7520

Check. Check: 7520 is a multiple of 10, and it is the closest one to 7523.

Watch out. Exactly 5 rounds up. Do not change the digits to the left of the place you round to, except when a carry is needed.

Worked example 2.4.3
Round 9995 to the nearest 10.

Method. Round to the nearest 10: look at the digits to the right of the ten place.

  1. Look at the ones digit. The digits on the right tell us which way to go.
    the ones digit is 5
  2. Decide: 5 or more. Half of 10 is 5. 5 or more rounds up; less than 5 rounds down.
    5 is at least 5
  3. Round up. Add one more ten, and the digits to the right become 0.
    9995 rounds up to 10000
  4. Write the answer. This is the nearest multiple.
    10000

Check. Check: 10000 is a multiple of 10, and it is the closest one to 9995.

Watch out. Exactly 5 rounds up. Do not change the digits to the left of the place you round to, except when a carry is needed.

Watch out

Watch out. 9995 rounds up to 10000, because 5 is five or more. Rounding can change the thousands digit.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Ask: “Is the ones digit five or more?” before the child writes the answer.
