Zero and negative indices
What happens when the index is 0 or negative? Look at the pattern of powers of 2. Going down the list, each power is the one above divided by 2.
| Power | 23 | 22 | 21 | 20 | 2−1 | 2−2 | 2−3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | 8 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 12 | 14 | 18 |
The pattern gives two rules.
Zero index. 20 = 1. In fact, any number (except 0) to the power 0 is 1. You can see why from the division law: 23 ÷ 23 = 23−3 = 20, but anything divided by itself is 1.
Negative index. A negative index means “one over”: 2−3 = 1 ÷ 23 = 18. In general a−n = 1an. It is the reciprocal of the positive power. A negative index does not make the number negative: 2−3 is a small positive fraction, not −8 and not −6.
The index laws still work with negative indices. For example 52 ÷ 54 = 52−4 = 5−2 = 125.
Key ideas
- a0 = 1 for any a that is not 0.
- a−n = 1 ÷ an: the reciprocal of an.
- A negative index gives a fraction, never a negative number (if the base is positive).
- The index laws work for all integer indices: add to multiply, subtract to divide.
- (Higher) (a/b)−n = (b/a)n.
Key words. In 25, 2 is the base and 5 is the index (also called the power or exponent). The plural of index is indices. 25 means five 2s multiplied together.
Method. Any number (except 0) raised to the power 0 equals 1.
- Write down the pattern of powers of 9, going down. Each time the index goes down by 1 we divide by 9.93 = 729
92 = 81
9 = 9 - Continue the pattern for index 0. Dividing 9 by 9 gives 1. This also follows from the division law: 93 ÷ 93 = 90, and anything divided by itself is 1.90 = 9 ÷ 9 = 1
- Write the answer. The same works for every base, so the answer does not depend on the base.90 = 1
Check. 94 ÷ 94 = 90 and also = 1. ✓
Watch out. 90 is 1, not 0 and not 9.
Key words. In 25, 2 is the base and 5 is the index (also called the power or exponent). The plural of index is indices. 25 means five 2s multiplied together. The reciprocal of a number is 1 divided by it.
Method. A negative index means the reciprocal: a−n = 1 ÷ an. It does not make the answer negative.
- Write down the pattern of powers going down. Each time the index goes down by 1 we divide by 2.23 = 8
22 = 4
2 = 2
20 = 1
2−1 = 12

2−3 = 18 - Spot the rule. A negative index means “one over”: 2−3 is the reciprocal of 23.2−3 = 123
- Work out the value of the bottom. Evaluate the positive power.23 = 8, so 2−3 = 18
Check. 2−3 × 23 should be 20 = 1: 18 × 8 = 1. ✓
Watch out. 2−3 is 18, not −8. The minus sign in the index changes it to a reciprocal.

Method. Work out the value of each number as a fraction or whole number, then put them in order.
- Work out each value. Use the rules for zero and negative indices.2−3 = 18
20 = 1
23 = 8
2−1 = 12
14 is already a number - Write them with a common denominator of 8. This makes the fractions easy to compare (see Chapter 3).18, 28, 48, 1, 8
- Order them, smallest first. Compare the values, and then write the original forms.2−3 (18), 14, 2−1 (12), 20 (1), 23 (8)
Check. As decimals: 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 8, which are in increasing order. ✓
Watch out. Convert every number to the same form before comparing.
Key words. In 25, 2 is the base and 5 is the index (also called the power or exponent). The plural of index is indices. 25 means five 2s multiplied together.
Method. Divide a power by itself in two different ways.
- Use the division law. Subtract the indices.23 ÷ 23 = 23−3 = 20
- Work it out with numbers. 23 = 8 and anything divided by itself is 1.8 ÷ 8 = 1
- Compare the two answers. Both ways give the same number.So 20 = 1.
Check. The pattern 8, 4, 2, 1 (halving each time) also gives 20 = 1. ✓
Key words. In 25, 2 is the base and 5 is the index (also called the power or exponent). The plural of index is indices. 25 means five 2s multiplied together.
Method. Use the rule for negative indices.
- Write the negative index as a reciprocal. a−n = 1 ÷ an.3−2 = 1 ÷ 32
- Work out 32. 32 = 9, so 3−2 = 19
- Compare. A negative index does not make the answer negative.−9 is wrong, so the statement is false.
Check. 32 × 3−2 = 9 × 19 = 1 = 30. ✓
Watch out. The minus sign in the index means reciprocal.
Key words. In 25, 2 is the base and 5 is the index (also called the power or exponent). The plural of index is indices. 25 means five 2s multiplied together.
Method. Write it as a fraction and then a decimal.
- Use the negative index rule. a−n = 1 ÷ an.2−1 = 12
- Change to a decimal. A half is 0.5.12 = 0.5
Check. 0.5 × 2 = 1. ✓
Key words. In 25, 2 is the base and 5 is the index (also called the power or exponent). The plural of index is indices. 25 means five 2s multiplied together.

Key words. In 25, 2 is the base and 5 is the index (also called the power or exponent). The plural of index is indices. 25 means five 2s multiplied together.
Method. Work out both values as fractions, then compare them.
- Work out 2−3. Reciprocal of 23.2−3 = 1 ÷ 8 = 18
- Work out 3−2. Reciprocal of 32.3−2 = 1 ÷ 9 = 19
- Compare the fractions. Same top (1): the fraction with the smaller denominator is bigger.18 > 19, so 2−3 is bigger.
Check. As decimals: 0.125 > 0.111... ✓
Watch out. A bigger denominator means a smaller fraction when the numerators are equal.
