Different ways to make the same amount

Year 1
Find different coins that make the same amount
A bakery. You can pay with different coins.

You can make the same amount with different coins. For example, 10p can be one 10p coin. It can also be two 5p coins, or five 2p coins. Each way adds up to 10p.

Count the coins in each row to check the total.

10p5p5p2p2p2p2p2p
Three ways to make 10p.

Key ideas

  • Different coins can make the same amount.
  • Add the coins up to check.
  • Two 5p coins make the same as one 10p coin.
  • Use the fewest coins when you can.
Worked example 12.4.1
Make 10p in two different ways.
1p2p5p10p

Method. There is more than one way. Each set of coins must add up to 10p.

  1. Try set 1. Add the coins in the set to check it.
    10p = 10p
  2. Try set 2. Add the coins in the set to check it.
    5p + 5p = 10p
  3. Write the answer. Any set that adds up to the amount is correct.
    10p or 5p + 5p

Check. Add the coins in each set again. Each one makes 10p. ✓

Watch out. Check the total of every set. A set that adds up to a different amount is wrong.

Worked example 12.4.2
Make 20p using only 5p coins. How many 5p coins do you need?
5p

Method. Add one coin at a time until you reach 20p.

  1. Add one coin at a time. Each coin is worth 5p.
    5p, 10p, 15p, 20p
  2. Count how many coins you added. The number of coins is the number of steps.
    4 coins
  3. Write the answer.
    4

Check. Check: 4 × 5p = 20p. ✓

Watch out. Add the same coin each time. Do not add 1 each time.

Worked example 12.4.3
Which two coins make 7p?
??

Method. Find two coins that add up to the amount. Try the bigger coins first.

  1. Try two coins. Pick two coins and add their values.
    5p + 2p
  2. Add them up. The total must be the amount we want.
    5p + 2p = 7p
  3. Write the answer. No other two coins make this amount.
    5p and 2p

Check. Add them the other way round: 2p + 5p = 7p. ✓

Watch out. The two coins can be the same, like two 10p coins.

Watch out

Watch out: a set of coins is only right if it adds up to the amount. Add the coins in each set before you say it is right.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Use real coins. Ask your child to make 10p in as many ways as they can. Then ask: “Which way uses the fewest coins?”
