Paying for things and change

Year 1
Solve simple money problems: paying for things and finding change
A shop. Pay for things and get change.

When we buy something, we pay its price. If we pay with more money than the price, the shop gives us back the difference. That is called change.

Here are some things to buy. Each price tag shows the price.

pencil5pruler6pball13p
Three things to buy and their prices.

To find the change, count on from the price to the money you paid.

Key ideas

  • The price is what something costs.
  • The change is the money you get back.
  • Count on from the price to the money you paid.
  • Price plus change makes the money you paid.
Worked example 12.5.1
A pencil costs 5p. Ravi pays with a 10p coin. What is his change?
pencil5p10p

Key words. The price is what something costs. The change is the money given back.

Method. Change is the money we get back. Count on from the price to the money paid.

  1. Start at the price. We count on from the price to the money paid.
    5p
  2. Count on to 10p. Each step adds on money until we reach the amount paid.
    5p + ? = 10p
  3. Find how much we counted on. The amount we counted on is the change.
    10p − 5p = 5p
  4. Write the answer.
    5p change

Check. Add the change to the price: 5p + 5p = 10p. ✓

Watch out. Change is the money paid minus the price. Do not add them.

Worked example 12.5.2
A ball costs 13p. Mei pays with a 20p coin. What is her change?
ball13p20p

Key words. The price is what something costs. The change is the money given back.

Method. Change is the money we get back. Count on from the price to the money paid.

  1. Start at the price. We count on from the price to the money paid.
    13p
  2. Count on to 20p. Each step adds on money until we reach the amount paid.
    13p + ? = 20p
  3. Find how much we counted on. The amount we counted on is the change.
    20p − 13p = 7p
  4. Write the answer.
    7p change

Check. Add the change to the price: 13p + 7p = 20p. ✓

Watch out. Change is the money paid minus the price. Do not add them.

Worked example 12.5.3
Tom buys a rubber for 2p and a ruler for 6p. How much does he spend?
rubber2pruler6p

Method. Start with the biggest coin, then count on. Say the value of each one as you add it.

  1. Start with the biggest coin or note. Starting with the biggest one is quick.
    6p
  2. Count on 2p. Add the value of the next coin or note.
    6p + 2p = 8p
  3. Write the total.
    8p

Check. Add them in a different order. You still get 8p. ✓

Watch out. Add the values, not the number of coins. Count each coin only once.

Watch out

Watch out: change is not the price. If a pencil costs 5p and you pay 10p, the change is 5p, not 10p. Check your change: price + change = money paid.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Play shop at home with real coins and a few cheap items. Ask: “How much change will you get?” Let your child count on from the price to the amount paid.
