Before, after and next: the order of the day

Year 1
Sequence events in order, Morning, afternoon and evening

Let’s put things in order. A day starts and it ends. We can say what happens first, next, then and last.

Before means earlier in the order. After means later. The part of the day helps too: morning is the start of the day, afternoon is after lunch, and evening is the end of the day.

A school day.

Five things that happen in one day. Read the cards in order.

Key ideas

  • First, next, then and last tell us the order.
  • Before means earlier. After means later.
  • Morning is the start of the day. Afternoon is after lunch. Evening is the end of the day.
  • Read the events in the order they happen, not the order they are on the page.
Worked example 13.1.1
What comes after breakfast?
wake upbreakfastschoolteabedtime

Key words. Before means earlier. After means later.

Method. Find breakfast on the picture. Then look at the card next to it on the right.

  1. Find the card for breakfast. Put your finger on the card with the word.
    breakfast
  2. Look at the card after it. Before means earlier in the day. After means later in the day.
    school
  3. Write the answer.
    school

Check. Read the cards in order to check: wake up, breakfast, school, tea, bedtime. ✓

Watch out. Read the cards in the order the day happens, not the order they are placed on the page.

Worked example 13.1.2
What part of the day is breakfast usually?

Key words. Morning is the start of the day. Afternoon is after lunch. Evening is at the end of the day.

Method. Think about when the event usually happens in the day.

  1. Think about breakfast. Ask yourself: does it happen at the start of the day, in the middle or at the end?
    breakfast
  2. Pick the part of the day. Breakfast usually happens in the morning.
    morning
  3. Write the answer.
    morning

Check. Morning comes first, then afternoon, then evening. ✓

Watch out. Morning is the start of the day. Evening is when the day is ending.

Worked example 13.1.3
Put these in order, first to last: bedtime, wake up, tea.

Method. Think about what happens first in the day, then what happens next.

  1. Think about the order of the day. We wake up, have breakfast, go to school, play in the park, have tea and go to bed.
    wake up → breakfast → school → park → tea → bedtime
  2. Put the words in that order. Each card comes after the one before it.
    wake up, tea, bedtime
  3. Write the answer, first to last.
    wake up, tea, bedtime

Check. The last card should be the one that happens last in the day. ✓

Watch out. Read the list in your head as a story: first, next, then, last.

Watch out

Watch out: read the cards in the order the day happens. The card that is first on the page is not always the first thing that happens.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Talk through your child’s day: “First we wake up, then we have breakfast.” Ask: “What comes after breakfast?” and “What comes before bedtime?” Use real photos of the day if you have them.
