Quicker, slower, earlier and later; measuring time

Year 1
Compare durations: quicker, slower, longer, shorter, Earlier and later, Seconds, minutes and hours

We measure time in seconds, minutes and hours. A second is very short. A minute is longer. An hour is much longer. There are 60 seconds in 1 minute.

A quicker time is less time. A slower time is more time. Earlier means before something else, and later means after it.

Races and games.

Key ideas

  • Seconds, minutes and hours are units of time.
  • A second is the shortest. An hour is the longest of the three.
  • Quicker and shorter mean less time.
  • Slower and longer mean more time.
  • Earlier means before. Later means after.
Worked example 13.6.1

Ravi12 secondsMei9 seconds

Key words. Quicker and shorter mean less time. Slower and longer mean more time.

Method. Compare the two numbers. Less time is quicker. More time is slower.

  1. Read the two times. Each time has a number and a unit.
Ravi: 12 seconds Mei: 9 seconds
  2. Compare the numbers. The smaller number is less time. The bigger number is more time.

Watch out. Seconds are the smallest. Hours are the biggest of the three.

Worked example 13.6.3
Breakfast is at 7 o’clock. School starts at 9 o’clock. Which is earlier?

Key words. Earlier means before. Later means after.

Method. The time with the smaller hour number comes first in the day.

  1. Read the two times. Each time is an o’clock time.
    breakfast: 7 o’clock school: 9 o’clock
  2. Compare the hour numbers. In the same part of the day, the smaller hour comes first.
    7 is smaller than 9
  3. Write the earlier one. Earlier means before the other time.
    breakfast

Check. Say the two times in order: the earlier one comes first. ✓
