Telling the time to half past the hour

Year 1
Telling the time to half past the hour

When the long hand points to the 6, the time is half past. Half past means half an hour after the hour.

At half past, the short hand is halfway between two numbers. It has just passed the number on the left. This clock shows half past 3: the long hand is on 6 and the short hand has just passed 3.

Watch out: at half past 4 the short hand is halfway between 4 and 5. It is not on 5 yet, so say half past 4, not 5 o’clock.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Use the paper clock again. Show o’clock (long hand on 12), then move the long hand round to 6. Ask: “Is it o’clock or half past?” Children often mix up the two hands at first. That is normal.
