Glass and water

Year 1
Name everyday materials: glass and water, Water is a liquid
A garden. Water, glass and other materials are all around us.

Glass is hard and see-through. We can see through a window or a clear jar. Glass is made by heating sand until it melts, then letting it cool.

Water is a liquid. It is see-through when it is clear. We find water in puddles, in rain and in drinks. Water has no shape of its own. It takes the shape of the container it is in.

Metal is not see-through. You cannot see through a tin.

Look at the jar, the window, the puddle and the tin.

Key ideas

  • Glass is hard and see-through. Light can pass through it.
  • Metal is not see-through.
  • Water is a liquid. It takes the shape of its container.
  • Glass is made by heating sand until it melts.
Worked example 7.3.1
What is the jar made from?
jar

Key words. An object is a thing, like a chair. A material is what an object is made from, like wood.

Method. Think about what the jar is made from.

  1. Look at the jar. Think about the stuff it is made of, not what it is used for.
    Object: jar
  2. Find its material. The material is the stuff the jar is made from.
    jar = glass
  3. Write the answer.
    glass

Check. Say it as a sentence: The jar is made from glass. ✓

Watch out. Say the material, not the object. The jar is the object. Glass is what it is made from.

Worked example 7.3.2
Which can we see through: the tin or the jar? Write the name.
tinjar

Key words. An object is a thing, like a chair. A material is what an object is made from, like wood.

Method. Look at each choice. Pick the one made from glass.

  1. Look at each choice. Think about what each one is made from.
    tin: metal; jar: glass
  2. Find the one made from glass. Only one choice has this material.
    jar is made from glass
  3. Write the answer.
    jar

Check. The other choices are made from different materials. ✓

Watch out. Look at the material, not the shape. Only the jar is made from glass.

Worked example 7.3.3
What is the puddle made from?
puddle

Key words. An object is a thing, like a chair. A material is what an object is made from, like wood.

Method. Think about what the puddle is made from.

  1. Look at the puddle. Think about the stuff it is made of, not what it is used for.
    Object: puddle
  2. Find its material. The material is the stuff the puddle is made from.
    puddle = water
  3. Write the answer.
    water

Check. Say it as a sentence: The puddle is made from water. ✓

Watch out. Say the material, not the object. The puddle is the object. Water is what it is made from.

Watch out

Watch out: water has no shape of its own. Pour it into a tall glass and it looks tall. Pour it into a wide dish and it spreads out. The glass keeps its shape. The water does not.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Look through a clean glass jar at a window together, and try to see through a metal tin. Ask: “Can you see through it?” Glass can break, so only handle it with a grown-up.

Try it at home

With a grown-up, put a clean glass jar and a metal tin on the table. Hold each one up to the window. Can you see through each one? Tell a grown-up what you notice. Keep glass away from the edge of the table.

Working scientifically

What do you think will happen to the water when we pour it into a tall, thin glass and into a wide, flat dish? How could we find out?
