KS2 Maths textbook
Year 4 Short Multiplication and Short Division: lesson and practice
- Strand Number
- Level Year 4
- Practice 130 questions with step-by-step solutions
By the end of this chapter you will be able to
- Multiply and divide whole numbers by 10 and 100 by moving the digits, not by “adding a zero”
- Multiply a two-digit or three-digit number by a one-digit number using partitioning, the grid method and the distributive law
- Use the expanded column method, then short multiplication with carrying
- Divide using place value and known facts, then use short division (the bus stop method) for 2-digit and 3-digit numbers
- Work out and use remainders, and decide what a remainder means in a story
- Solve scaling problems (“4 times as many”) and correspondence problems (3 hats and 5 tops make 15 outfits)
- Multiply three numbers, and solve word problems using bar models
You should already know
- Times tables up to 12 × 12 and the matching division facts (Chapter 3)
- Place value in numbers up to 10,000 (Chapter 1)
- Column addition with carrying (Chapter 2)
- Multiplying by 10 in the 10 times table, and using known facts like 6 × 7 = 42 to work out 60 × 7
Where this leads
- Fractions of amounts and dividing quantities (Chapter 5)
- Money, decimals, and dividing by 10 and 100 to make decimals (Chapter 6)
- Perimeter and area (Chapter 7)
- Long multiplication and long division in Years 5 and 6
- Multiplying and dividing by 1,000 in Year 5
