KS2 Maths textbook
Year 4 Shapes, Angles and Symmetry: lesson and practice
- Strand Geometry
- Level Year 4
- Practice 125 questions with step-by-step solutions
By the end of this chapter you will be able to
- Describe turns as quarter, half, three-quarter and whole turns, and know that a right angle is a quarter turn
- Identify acute, right and obtuse angles and a straight line, and compare and order angles up to two right angles
- Name triangles (equilateral, isosceles, scalene and right-angled) and say how you know
- Name quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezium and kite) and describe them using sides, angles and parallel and perpendicular lines
- Name regular and irregular polygons, such as pentagons, hexagons, heptagons and octagons
- Sort shapes using Venn and Carroll diagrams, and solve “Which shape am I?” riddles
- Find lines of symmetry in shapes, letters and patterns, whichever way round they are
- Complete a symmetric figure on a grid using a vertical, horizontal or diagonal mirror line
You should already know
- Names of 2-D shapes: square, rectangle, triangle, circle (Years 1 to 3)
- A right angle is a quarter turn (Year 3)
- Counting sides and corners
- Fractions of a turn: quarter, half and three-quarter (Chapter 5)
- Telling the time on a clock face (Chapter 8)
Where this leads
- Position and direction: coordinates and translations (Chapter 10)
- Measuring angles with a protractor and angles in degrees (Year 5)
- Reflection and translation of shapes (Year 5)
- Angles on a line and at a point, and angles in shapes (Years 5 and 6)
