KS2 Maths textbook
Year 4 Coordinates and Translation: lesson and practice
- Strand Geometry
- Level Year 4
- Practice 114 questions with step-by-step solutions
By the end of this chapter you will be able to
- Read and write the coordinates of a point, with the x-coordinate (along) first and the y-coordinate (up) second
- Plot points on a grid, join them to make a polygon and name the shape
- Find a missing corner of a square, rectangle, parallelogram, kite or isosceles triangle, and a missing coordinate on a horizontal or vertical line
- Describe a translation as a number of units left or right and up or down, and write the new coordinates
- Translate a shape on a grid and describe the move between two shapes
- Use grid references and the eight compass points to describe where things are on a map
- Follow and write routes and robot programs using forward, turn left and turn right, and solve treasure-map problems
You should already know
- Counting along a number line to 12 (Years 1 to 3)
- Names of 2-D shapes: squares, rectangles, triangles and kites (Chapter 9)
- Right angles and quarter turns (Chapter 9)
- Left, right, up and down; North, East, South and West (Chapter 9)
- Adding and subtracting small numbers (Chapter 2)
Where this leads
- Statistics: bar charts and graphs with axes (Chapter 11)
- Reflection and translation of shapes (Year 5)
- Coordinates in all four quadrants, with negative numbers (Year 6)
- Drawing and translating shapes on the full coordinate plane (Year 6)
