Drawing a translation

Year 5
Represent the position of a shape following a translation, using the appropriate language

To draw a translation, move every corner the same number of squares. Start with one corner. Count the squares across, then count the squares up or down, and put a dot. Then do the same for every other corner, and join the dots in the same order.

Check your drawing: the new shape must be the same size and shape as the old one.

The blue house on a grid. To draw it moved 3 squares to the right, add 3 to the across distance of every corner.

Key ideas

  • To draw a translation, move every corner the same number of squares.
  • Count across first, then up or down.
  • Check that the new shape is the same size and shape as the old one.
Worked example 10.2.1
Draw the triangle moved 2 squares to the right and 3 squares up. Where is the new bottom-left corner?

Key words. A translation slides a shape. Every point moves the same distance, in the same direction. The shape does not turn, flip or change size.

Method. Find the new position of the bottom-left corner, one move at a time.

  1. Start at the corner. The bottom-left corner is 1 square from the left edge and 0 squares from the bottom.
    1 across, 0 up
  2. Move 2 squares to the right. Moving right adds to the across distance.
    1 + 2 = 3
  3. Move 3 squares up. Moving up adds to the height.
    0 + 3 = 3
  4. Write the answer.
3 squares from the left edge and 3 squares from the bottom

Check. The new corner is 2 squares right and 3 squares up from the old one. ✓

Watch out. Add the moves to the numbers. Do not write the moves on their own.

Worked example 10.2.2
Draw the house moved 3 squares to the left and 2 squares down. Where is the new bottom-left corner?

Key words. A translation slides a shape. Every point moves the same distance, in the same direction. The shape does not turn, flip or change size.

Method. Find the new position of the bottom-left corner, one move at a time.

  1. Start at the corner. The bottom-left corner of the house is 4 squares from the left edge and 4 squares from the bottom.
    4 across, 4 up
  2. Move 3 squares to the left. Moving left takes away from the across distance.
    4 − 3 = 1
  3. Move 2 squares down. Moving down takes away from the height.
    4 − 2 = 2
  4. Write the answer.
1 square from the left edge and 2 squares from the bottom

Check. Go back 3 squares to the right and 2 squares up to reach the start. ✓

Watch out. Left and down take away. Right and up add.

Worked example 10.2.3
The orange L shape is a translation of the blue one. Describe the move, then check it on another corner.AA'

Key words. A translation slides a shape. Every point moves the same distance, in the same direction. The shape does not turn, flip or change size.

Method. Count the squares across, then up or down, from one corner. Every corner moves the same way.

  1. Pick one corner of the shape. Use the same corner (A) on the start shape and on the image.
    corner A
  2. Count 2 squares to the right. The matching corner of the image is 2 squares right.
    2 squares right
  3. Count 2 squares down. The matching corner of the image is 2 squares down.
    2 squares down
  4. Check another corner. Every corner moves the same way, so the shape only slides.
    ✓ the same move
  5. Write the answer.
2 squares to the right and 2 squares down

Check. Count from another corner and you get the same move. ✓

Watch out. Count the squares on the grid. Do not count the sides of the shape.

Watch out

A common mistake is to move some corners and not others. Every corner must move the same number of squares, in the same way. When you have finished, check that the new shape is still the same size.

Exercise 10B  Drawing a shape after a translation

Non-calculator
1
FDraw the house moved 3 squares to the right. How many squares from the left edge is the left side of the new house?
2
FDraw the triangle moved 2 squares up. How many squares above the bottom edge is the top corner of the new triangle?
3
FDraw the L shape moved 2 squares right and 1 square down. How many squares from the left edge and from the bottom is the bottom-left corner of the new shape?
4
FDraw the arrow moved 4 squares to the left. The tip is marked T. How many squares from the left edge is the tip of the new arrow?T
5
PSDraw the house moved in each way.   Answer for each move.
(a)(a) 2 squares to the right: how many squares from the bottom edge is the bottom side of the new house?
(b)(b) 2 squares up: how many squares from the bottom edge is the bottom side of the new house?
(c)(c) 2 squares to the right and 2 squares up: how many squares from the bottom edge is the bottom side of the new house?
6
RSam draws the triangle moved 3 squares to the right. He says he moved it 3 squares up instead. What did he do wrong?
7
PSA rectangle is 4 squares wide and 2 squares high. Its bottom-left corner is on the bottom-left corner of the grid. It moves 3 squares to the right and 1 square up. How many squares from the left edge and from the bottom is its bottom-right corner now?
8
PSThe top-right corner of a triangle is 5 squares from the left edge and 6 squares from the bottom. The triangle moves 2 squares to the left and 4 squares down. Where is the top-right corner now?
9
RRuby says the order of the moves does not matter. Is she right? Try 2 squares right then 3 squares up, and then 3 squares up then 2 squares right.
10
FWhen a shape is translated, which one of these changes: its position, its size or its direction? Write the word.
11
PSThe new triangle is 3 squares to the right and 2 squares up from the old one. How many squares from the left edge is the left-hand corner of the new triangle?AA'
12
PSA counter is 4 squares from the left edge and 5 squares from the bottom. It moves 3 squares to the right and 1 square down. Where is it now?
13
RA shape has been moved 4 squares to the right. Describe a move that takes the shape back to where it started.
