Flipping shapes: reflections

Year 5
Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection, using the appropriate language

A reflection flips a shape over a mirror line. The mirror line is shown as a dashed red line. Every point of the image is the same distance from the mirror line as the point it came from, but on the other side.

The image is the same size and the same shape as the original. It faces the other way round, like your reflection in a mirror. A mirror line can be vertical (up and down) or horizontal (across).

AA'
The blue house is flipped over the dashed red mirror line. The orange house is its image.

Key ideas

  • A reflection flips a shape over a mirror line.
  • The image is the same distance from the mirror line as the original, on the other side.
  • The image is the same size and shape, but it faces the other way round.
Worked example 10.3.1
Corner A of the blue house is 2 squares from the mirror line. Where is its image A'?AA'

Key words. A reflection flips a shape over a mirror line. Each point and its image are the same distance from the mirror line, on opposite sides.

Method. Count the squares from the point to the mirror line, then count the same number on the other side.

  1. Find the mirror line. The dashed red line is the mirror line.
    the dashed red line
  2. Count the squares from the point to the line. The point is 2 squares left the line.
    2 squares
  3. Count the same number on the other side. A reflection puts the image the same distance from the line, on the other side.
    2 squares right the line
  4. Write the answer.
2 squares to the right of the mirror line

Check. The point and its image are both 2 squares from the line. ✓

Watch out. The image is on the other side of the line, not on the same side.

Worked example 10.3.2
The bottom corner of the blue triangle is 5 squares below a horizontal mirror line. Where is the image of that corner?AA'

The point is 5 squares below the line.
    5 squares
  3. Count the same number on the other side. A reflection puts the image the same distance from the line, on the other side.
    5 squares above the line
  4. Write the answer.
5 squares above the mirror line

Check. The point and its image are both 5 squares from the line. ✓

Watch out. The image is on the other side of the line, not on the same side.

Worked example 10.3.3
A point is 3 squares to the left of a vertical mirror line. Where is its image?

The point is 3 squares left the line.
    3 squares
  3. Count the same number on the other side. A reflection puts the image the same distance from the line, on the other side.
    3 squares right the line
  4. Write the answer.
3 squares to the right of the mirror line

Check. The point and its image are both 3 squares from the line. ✓

Watch out. The image is on the other side of the line, not on the same side.

Watch out

A common mistake is to put the image on the same side of the mirror line as the original. The image must be on the other side. Also, a reflection is not a slide: the image is the same distance from the line on the other side, so count from the line, not from the original shape.

Exercise 10C  Mirror lines and distances

Non-calculator
1
FCount the squares from corner A to the mirror line. How far is A from the mirror line?AA'
2
FHow many squares is the bottom of the blue triangle from the mirror line?
3
FWrite where the image of each point is. Give the number of squares and the side of the mirror line.
(a)(a) a point 2 squares to the left of a vertical mirror line: where is its image?
(b)(b) a point 2 squares to the right of a vertical mirror line: where is its image?
(c)(c) a point 3 squares above a horizontal mirror line: where is its image?
4
FThe mirror line is 4 squares from the left edge. The image of a point is 7 squares from the left edge. How many squares from the mirror line is the point?
5
PSCorner B is 4 squares from the mirror line. How many squares from the mirror line is its image B'?ABA'B'
6
RAli says a point 3 squares from a mirror line has an image 2 squares from the line. Is Ali right? Explain.
7
PSThe mirror line is 5 squares from the left edge. A point is 2 squares from the left edge.   (a) How far is the point from the mirror line?   (b) How far from the left edge is its image?
(a)(a) how far is the point from the mirror line?
(b)(b) how far from the left edge is its image?
8
PSThe mirror line is 4 squares above the bottom edge. A corner is 10 squares above the bottom edge. How many squares below the mirror line is its image?
9
FA horizontal mirror line is 3 squares from the bottom edge. A point is 1 square above the mirror line. How many squares from the bottom edge is its image?
10

(a)(a) a corner 1 square to the left of the mirror line
(b)(b) a corner 3 squares to the right of the mirror line
11
RA shape is reflected in a vertical mirror line. Its image is then reflected in the same line. Where is the final shape?
12
RA point lies exactly on the mirror line. Where is its image?
13
RA point is 2 squares from the left edge. Its image is 8 squares from the left edge. How far from the left edge is the mirror line?   Show your working.
