Perimeter and area of rectangles, triangles, parallelograms and composite shapes

Year 6
Calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes and the area of rectangles, triangles and parallelograms (Year 5-6)
Story. Ravi is fencing and painting a garden shed. He needs the area of the front wall, which is a rectangle with a triangle on top, and the perimeter of the garden shape to order the fencing.

Rule

Rectangle: area = length x width. Triangle: area = base x perpendicular height / 2. Parallelogram: area = base x perpendicular height.

For a shape made of rectangles, find each area and add them. For perimeter, add all the outside sides.

Key ideas

  • Use the perpendicular height for triangles and parallelograms.
  • A triangle is half of a rectangle with the same base and height.
  • The perimeter of a rectilinear shape is the total length of its outside edges.
Worked example 4.4.1
A rectangle is 12 cm long and 7 cm wide. What is its area? Write the answer with square units.

Method. Multiply the length by the width.

  1. Write the formula. Area of a rectangle = length x width.
    12 x 7
  2. Multiply. Multiply the length by the width.
    12 x 7 = 84
  3. Write the units as square units. The area is measured in square cm.
    84 cm²
  4. Write the answer.
    84 cm²

Check. 84 / 12 = 7. ✓

Watch out. Area is measured in square units, so the answer ends with a small 2, such as cm².

Worked example 4.4.2
A triangle has a base of 10 cm and a perpendicular height of 6 cm. What is its area?

Method. Multiply the base by the height, then halve.

  1. Write the formula. Area of a triangle = base x height / 2.
    10 x 6 / 2
  2. Multiply the base and the height. Multiply first.
    10 x 6 = 60
  3. Halve the answer. A triangle is half of a rectangle with the same base and height.
    60 / 2 = 30
  4. Write the answer. Square units for area.
    30 cm²
  5. Write the answer.
    30 cm²

Check. A rectangle 10 by 6 has area 60, and half of it is 30. ✓

Watch out. Use the perpendicular height, not the slanted side.

Worked example 4.4.3
A shape is made from two rectangles. One is 6 cm by 4 cm, and the other is 3 cm by 2 cm. What is the total area?

Method. Split the shape into rectangles, find each area, then add.

  1. Split the shape into two rectangles. Rectangle 1 is 6 cm by 4 cm; rectangle 2 is 3 cm by 2 cm.
    6 x 4 and 3 x 2
  2. Find each area. Multiply the length and width of each rectangle.
    24 and 6
  3. Add the areas. The total area is the sum of the two parts.
    24 + 6 = 30
  4. Write the answer. Square units for area.
    30 cm²
  5. Write the answer.
    30 cm²

Check. 24 + 6 = 30. ✓

Watch out. Check that the two rectangles do not overlap.

Watch out

Watch out. Do not use the slanted side of a triangle or a parallelogram. Use the perpendicular height.

Exam tip

Practice guide. Draw the shape and label the lengths before you multiply.
