Labels, lists and captions

Year 1
Write labels, lists and captions

Some writing is short. A label names one thing in a picture, in one or two words. A list puts several things one under another, one on each line. A caption is a whole sentence that tells us about a picture.

Look at these things for drawing and writing. Each one could have a label.

Four things for drawing and writing. Write a label for each one.

Key ideas

  • A label is one or two words that name one thing.
  • A list has one thing on each line.
  • A caption is a sentence, with a capital letter and a full stop.
  • A caption tells us about the picture.
Worked example 11.5.1
Write a label for the thing with a point. It is used for writing.

Method. Find the thing with a point, then write its name as a label.

  1. Look at the picture. Find the thing with a point at one end.
    the thing with a point
  2. Say its name. Say the name of the thing, in one word.
    pencil
  3. Write the label.
    pencil

Check. Check the spelling: p-e-n-c-i-l. ✓

Watch out. A label is one word here, not a sentence.

Worked example 11.5.2
Write this list, one thing on each line: a ball, a book, a bus

Key words. A list is things written one under another.

Method. Write each thing on its own line, one under the other.

  1. Look at the picture. Find each thing in the picture.
    ball, book, bus
  2. Write one thing on each line. Each thing gets its own line, so it is easy to read.
    ball
    book
    bus
  3. Check the list. Count the things in the list and in the picture.
    3 things

Check. Check that each thing in the list is in the picture. ✓

Watch out. Do not write the things in one long line. A list has one thing on each line.

Worked example 11.5.3
Which is a caption for the picture of the fish? A: The fish is orange. B: fish

Method. A caption is a sentence that tells us about the picture.

  1. Look at the picture. The picture shows a fish.
    a fish
  2. Read the two captions. A caption must be a whole sentence about the fish. A is a sentence. B is one word.
A: The fish is orange.   B: fish
  3. Choose the caption.
    A: The fish is orange.

Check. Read A out loud. It tells us about the picture. ✓

Watch out. A caption is a whole sentence. One word is a label, not a caption.

Watch out

Watch out: a list is not one long line. Put each thing on its own line. A caption is a whole sentence, so it needs a capital letter and a full stop. A label does not need a full stop.

Exam tip

Grown-up tip. Walk around the house with your child, and ask them to label three things with one word each. Practise on paper: make a list of three toys, one on each line. Then write one caption about your child’s favourite toy.
