Rule
Timings in this book are a practice guide only. They are not a rule of the official test. Work steadily: check each answer with a quick estimate, then move on.
Key ideas
- Work out each question in your head before writing the answer.
- Estimate first to see whether the answer is sensible.
- If you are stuck, split the numbers and try again.
Method. Multiply first, then add.
- Multiply. 8 × 7 = 56.56
- Add. 56 + 9 = 65.65
- Write the answer. 65
Check. About 8 × 7 = 56, plus 9 is about 65. ✓
Method. Think of 25 as a quarter of 100.
- Use the fact. 25 is one quarter of 100, so 25 × 4 is 100.25 × 4
- Check. Four lots of 25 make 100.25 + 25 + 25 + 25 = 100
- Write the answer. 100
Check. 100 ÷ 4 = 25. ✓
Method. Subtract 3 and then add back the 0.1 taken too much.
- Subtract 3. 6.4 - 3 = 3.4.3.4
- Add 0.1. 2.9 is 0.1 more than 3, so add 0.1 back.3.5
- Write the answer. 3.5
Check. 3.5 + 2.9 = 6.4. ✓
